Rear brake replacement questions

Going to replace rear brake pads on a 2004 grand prix gt 3800 series 3 soon. Anything I should know ahead of time that I may not expect before doing this? Are torx sockets necessary? Does the emergency brake become an issue when changing the pads? Is a brake hardware kit recommended? Any advice before I do this is appreciated.
