Radio distortion/static/high pitch squeal

So, quite some time ago replaced the radio with another oem unit. Has been problem free until recently. This all started about a month ago. At first if I drove for over any hour and a half the radio would start going to static and getting a high pitch squeal whether the radio was on or off. Hit the dash by the radio and it would go away for a short time, then come back. Now it's doing it just after driving for 20 minutes (which just so happens to be the amount of time of my daily commute). I'm pretty sure this means the radio is fried, but figured I'd ask here before dumping money into a new head unit again. Any help is greatly appreciated.
