radiator fan relay problem

I have a '08 GP, standard except for aftermarket radio. 106k miles, runs fine. Heater puts out some heat but not as much as other cars I've had - this could be relevant to the problem.

Engine light came on last week. Went to auto zone, problem code said cooling fan relay #2. Fan has 3 relays I noticed, controls high and low speeds. Replaced it, guy at auto zone said light will go off when the system resets itself.

After 2 days and 80 miles, light was still on so I went to local mechanic with good rep. He confirmed the same OBD code, but said light does not turn off by itself, needs to be reset by the OBD scanner. So he reset it. Next day the engine light is back on.

Haven't noticed any other symptoms. The fans run, but I don't know if high or low speed.
I'll probably take it in this week but I'm wondering: could it be one of the other relays? or is something else blowing the #2 relay? Could the lack of heat mean the fans are always running fast? If this is something simple I'd rather do it myself since the relays cost less than 20 bucks.
Ideas or similar experiences?

What's frustrating is I can't find anything wrong with it. Both fans turn freely when power is off. I ran it til the temp gauge was halfway up, both fans came on as normal. They run quietly enough that I don't hear them. It might be just the relay that controls fan speed. I'm gonna take it in anyway just to find out.
