Rack and Pinion/Power Steering Pump ??

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT I keep having a problem of whining noise sounds like power steering. Replaced the pump twice however both times car was full of fluid. This time the noise started and within 2 days I have no power steering. I have been told a couple different things but I am assuming it needs a new Rack N Pinion. Is this a issue other owners may have had?

the racks go bad. some what common.

if it started to be hard to turn left only for a while, then got hard to turn right as well the rack went bad.
