Quick question on Air Induction CAI

So I ordered a PCM and other items from from overkill last week and I was talking to Will and he stated that if you keep the stock box which comes in three sections and gut out the center to equal the entire sizes of the stock filter, and then remove the 3rd part of the box that sits behind the headlights and cut it to equal the true opening. Then drop in a cone (4x9)

True it does not have the looks of a Wizaired or a cold air inductions box but, you have a very large opening inside of the stock air box which should provide equal performance.

Unless posters are scanning and giving you numbers you are going to get allot of inferences and opinions about this rather then some actual evidence.

That being said my opinion is that the stock air box would heat soak allot easier and faster then would a Wizaired and a Cold air inductions box. The plastic is more dense then the insulation on the later two and therefore wouldn't transfer heat to the environment as easily. Also [if your taking off the part i'm thinking of], you would get allot of heat from the engine compartment thus effectively making your CAI a HAI.
 
Thanks for your reply and thoughts. But I just want to make sure that yo uare understanding me correctly. The entire factory air box in still intack except for the interior is totally gutted out.
 
Ah i think i get it entirely now, you are modifying the part of the box that sits behind the headlight [for some reason i didn't quite grasp that the first time around]. Unless you could get the airbox opening to sit flush against an area where it can get fresh outside air it will still be sucking in air from the engine compartment. The wizaired, and cold air inductions box [if im not mistaking] sit flush against the right side of the engine compartment effectively mostly sucking air from the inside of the fender. [My Thrasher does this.]
 
The stock airbox has a hole that pulls air in from the fender area. Problem is it gets heat soaked easily. I think what he is proposing is certainly possible, but the gains would be dubious at best.

It's definitely an inexpensive mod, though.
 
Have a look at this write-up. http://www.grandprixforums.net/f18/gutted-airbox-pictures-1103.html This was made to house the stock type filter but increase airflow. To be honest, with the PCM taking up so much room I can't imagine getting a 4x9 cone filter to fit inside.

Now if by removing the 3rd piece, you are talking about the piece that seals to the headlight area, then you might as well just use your stock fduct with a 3.75 dia aluminum tube to fit the cone right on it because without that piece it will be a HAI anyway. imho
 


has anyone ever created a "ram air" box? by that i mean fabbing up a scoop that sits under the bumper, then is routed up directly to the filter be it in the fender of engine compartment?
 
that would have way too many bends to make any good intake. the only way to do it would be to mold a scoop into the headlight area.

it probably works decently. you might also be able to get away with ducting something from the foglight, but honestly ram air is a bad concept anyway. you have to be going in excess of 150 to get any sort of boost out of it.

um ya...not so much...i just was thinking it would get some more cold air up to the filter. not looking for performance there....
 
Only way to get anymore cooler air to the filter would be to get a Fender Well Intake or taking the headlight out when you go to the track. Anything else is'nt going to provide any kind of airflow needed to reach the filter.

You can't. Tried it already...And there is also no way to mount the PCM on the outside undeneath (the only place it will go because the harness comming off of it is so short) because it will lift the Stock air box upp to high for the radiator support braces.
 


Also the temps of the gutted stock air box are very similiar to a hot air intake. Or cone on the throttle body. I've done the experiment so thats how i know.The HAI's temps were up to 170's and the stock gutted air box temps werent far off
