question about charging system failure message

Hi there, I was just out running some errands and I pulled into a parking lot going a little fast and up over a bump. Then got what I came for and left. about 30 secs later while driving home I got a charging system failure message on my display, and it kept repeating over and over and all out of sync. like 3 beeps in a row, then 1, then 2, etc. I also notice a sound while I was accelerating, kind of like a faint squeal. The squeal was there even when i wasn't accelerating as well it just got louder when I accelerated. About 1 min before i got home the repeated messaging stopped but the squeal stayed. When I got home, I came inside for a minute and then came back out to take a look. I turned the car on and no squeal, i looked under the hood with the car running to see if maybe the belt was what was making the noise, or possibly wobbling around, but it seemed fine. Then i decided to take it around the block to see if i could get it to make the noise or give me a message again, but nothing. My question is, does anyone on here think that maybe I dislodged the serpentine belt during the hard turn over the bump and then it popped back in and now it's fine, or could it be something else? Thanks

Re: question about charging system failure messagae

If you dislodged the serpentine belt, you will notice some dislodging traces on the surface of the belt. While the charging system refers to the generator as one of its elements, how many miles have the generator running already?

Re: question about charging system failure messagae

The alternator is original as far as I know. Which means its about ten years old. Would it make a noise if it was failing though?

Re: question about charging system failure messagae

Ok so what should I do? Use a multimeter to test the alternator, and take a look at the belt to see if there are any signs it wasn't running true when i was getting the messages? Also i did get a new battery back in September, but that was a while ago so I wouldn't think that was the problem, maybe you know more.

Re: question about charging system failure messagae

Check and make sure all the battery cables and connections are clean and tight as well. Even if one is a little loose it can cause all kinds of wierd things to happen.

Had this issue with my GXP, assuming you have an '04+ car.

Alternator was toast.

Needed a new belt.
