Solving problems
Edit 1: When I started this thread, I had no idea where this motor was going. Since then it's been decided. Another S10 V8 swap. Figured I should put a picture of said truck in the first post. Here it is

Edit 2: The swap is done.

Begin original post:

I've been searching all over, trying to find a decent deal on a more modern engine for my old truck. After a whole lot of failure, I finally found something. Ad was for a 2002 Chevy truck, with a stock photo of a burgundy 2500 Silverado. So I make the call, and ask what engine it has. Guy says, "Uh, 5.7... I think". I say to myself, Great! He has no idea what he has! When can I come see it? "Right now?" he says, and I'm off. I get there, do a whole lot of haggling, and a bunch of back and forth, long story short... I brought it home! Well, a tow truck brought it home.

Part of the back and forth was negotiating what parts they could take off to get to the price I could pay. So, off came the flares, brush guard, and hitch. I told them they could come back for the wheels and tires if they brought me some replacements.

Here's the real reason I worked so hard to make this deal happen:

That's right, 6 liters.

The plan is to pull the motor, trans, and all associated electronics. Then part out everything else. If I play my cards right, I could end up with a LQ4/4L80 combo for free.

What do you guys think?

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

I had one of those in my yukon.. loved it! What is the old truck you want to put it in

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

how much was it? junkyards sell the LQ4 alone for 1500, and the 4L80 for about 1000. depending on how much you paid, you might make out like a bandit.

I was looking for something for my '84 K-10, but I think this setup will end up in something else. Yet to be determined. Still on the hunt for a late model GEN 2 5.7 from a truck or SUV.

I paid.....

$1300

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

nice. that's the deal of a lifetime. if it was me, I would consider doing heads and a cam on that 6.0 and then get it tuned. those things can make decent hp with just heads and a cam, I think upwards of 450

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

I did have to drop $140 to get it home. They had to drag it out from where it was sitting

The guy said it already had an aftermarket cam in it. I'll have to pull it apart to verify.

Oh, and I have HPTuners. I plan to really dive in on this one. With the GP, I was just kind of making small changes. IFR, fan control, code deletes...

if I remember right, a lot of people are using the LS3 heads and a hot cam to make that power.

a local guy turbocharged his LQ4 and made like 700 hp

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

Thats a good snag any day of the week. How many miles?

I've been watching a lot of Sloppy Mechanics YouTube videos. He's got a turbo'd LQ4 in a Colorado. Can't remember what it put down for numbers, but it's impressive.

A mere 155k! It's barely broken in.

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

Shift linkage or the cable is broken. Gotta get that fixed. Can't be crawling under it every time I have to move it.

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

The factory 317 heads are good enough, I wouldn't even touch them.

Hydroboost is for more braking power and easier steerings with pulling trailers. Many guys with performance built truck will add hydroboost to their trucks so they can have way more braking force compared to a stock master.

I'd still swap the rear end out, the G80 is still weak. A eaton posi or tru-trac is better.

And with the low miles I wouldn't even dig into it. Clean it up and inspect what you want but I'd leave the bottom end alone and spend money elsewhere.

Probably just scrub the crud off. Don't even plan to pull them. Why tear something apart that's already working, right?

You think it's worth hanging on to?

So it's not worth fighting over when I let the chassis go?

Like turbo...

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

The 14 bolt is stupid strong, just the stock diff inside it is the weak point. The G80 is only built to be a posi unit up to around 25 mph for getting moving in the snow/mud. It will still leave two black marks with alot of power but the way it turns itself into a posi unit is weak. The springs and spider gears aren't strong enough to handle alot of power and just grenade.

If want a rear end to handle alot of power, they switch to a 14 bolt and swap out the stock posi unit for one that is built to be a real posi all the time.

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

I guess I'll have to see what I end up getting. That will probably determine what I do.

I just want a vehicle that will do rolling burnouts.

Re: Project LQ4 - Good things come to those who wait....And pay cash!

Started playing around with the wiring today. Getting a game plan. Figured I'd pull the pcm and see if it worked with the off board I built for the GP. Turns out, it does!

Just killed the VATS for now...

OBD 2 Port pin #2

PCM Blue Plug #59

Saved for future reference

Re: Project LQ4 - Motor's coming out... This weekend?

Been picking away at it, bit by bit. I'm pretty sure all the connections and fasteners are off. I'm also fairly certain the t-case will have to come off the trans before it will come out. That's going to be a challenge.

Otherwise, I think it's ready to come out! Still have to figure out where to hook the chain.
