Project GT??? Ideas.

I have a project idea I have been wanting to do. There is a track kind of local to me (West Salem, in Wisconsin) that does side by side drag racing every friday night. The catch is the track is only about as long as a football field and its double elimination, very fast paced (you get like 2 seconds to stage) racing. It's actually a circle track that they set up for side by side short distance drags.

The car:
My brothers Black 99 GT : Cost - $Cheap as hell

This car would also be like a winter beater for me basically, dd/anywhere car, why not right?

Well the plan would be to top swap it which wouldn't be hard or costly at all, and then most likely intercool it as I'm not quite wanting to do another cam, YET. I also have some 13lb 16x8 RX7 FD Rims that I could put on the car to help shed drivetrain mass. (Yes nick, I know, you don't like the looks of those rims, but they're light) I'd also gut what I can.

What do you guys think? Thanks for Opinions.

Thought I might add.. It's basically like a 0-70mph-ish race, to give you perspective.

Sounds like fun. I have been tossing around buying an F-body or a C5 and hitting the track myself. With the state of the economy you can find deals fairly often these days. I just wish I had a bigger garage.

And I like the light rim idea; I’d say it would be good for a tenth or two. And I’d paste on some MT ET street radials if I were you.:th_thumbsup-wink:

On a side note, when you go to the track you practically drive past my house.

okay, youre on the right track. reasons to use a GT to start: higher compression, 3.29 gearing, cheap car. the only problem is that the car needs boost to go anywhere so youre gonna have to top swap it. in order to get any reasonable amount of power out of a top swap setup im gonna say that youre gonna want to run a cam again. because its a low end grunt race youre gonna want a cam that has a lot of mid range (VS or S1x).

at that point the only thing holding you back from demolishing a lot of other cars is you getting it to hook at the line.

Hmm.. mid range cam could be done I suppose. I almost think that if I could intercool it first that would be better though. Less work and should be the same gains as a cam if not better. I'm pretty sure I can get it to hook if i roll into it. I always got my GTP to hook up very nicely even with the XP cam and a 3.2. A top swap will be the absolute first mod. I've never driven or ridden in a top swapped car though, is it much different then a lightly modded gtp, if any?

Also: A nice thing about this is that I will be racing against other FWD's only. So if I can hook up better or the same as them it'll be a HP race.
