Pre Top Swap Questions

Ok I found a GTP in the junk yard, it was wrecked from behind. Im getting the whole engine and transmission cheap because we know the owners well. My questions are what exactly do i need to pull off the old engine to make this work the best. The super charger, LIM, Fuel rail, for sure. But now what? Can I use the GTP stock fuel injectors or do I need to buy different ones? Can the stock PCM work for it or do I have to get it re-programmed? Should I use the GTP stock Rockers? In the future I want to put a cam in it so ill need new springs and re-tuned PCM for that. Anything else I should take? Also what is a Built transmission? Can I tear apart this extra one I have and add parts to it? Thanks for the Help

better is always subjective, i wont say too much because i'm not an expert on these motors but i think there would be less chance of issues with the l67

***This swap intended for a swap retaining the L36 Harmonic Balancer. Although you can change it out, I did not. You cannot run anything smaller than a 3.25 SS pulley with the stock GT balancer***

You will need:

L67 Throttle Body
L67 LIM
L67 Heads
L67 Fuel Rail
L67 Injectors
SS Pullies, standoff and idler
M90 Supercharger
Spark Plugs
All new gaskets
All new bolts
Coil bracket
Coolant
3 inch downpipe
Cold Air Intake system
New O-Rings
Custom Tune for a Top Swap

Found this. It just doesn't seem like is that much

Yes I would presume there would be less issues if i just swap it. But I like working on my Car and taking it apart and putting it back together

not sure if the car is your dd or not, but if it is, wouldnt it be nice to build the l67 since its already out of the car, put in a cam..etc. and meanwhile u can still drive your car

Good point. This is my DD but in the summer I can usually only have to get to work and i can arrange that for a while, and we are trying to buy a bike to save on gas in the summer. So If we get the bike, I can have this car sit for a week without any worries

X2 on that one, get the l67 and work it over, and swap it in at a later date. your much better off with low compression and a sc.

grab the pcm and the engine harness from the donor car.

Ok thanks. Yea Im starting to think it over. It is easier to change things when the engine is out of car. If i put a cam in the GTP engine can the stock transmission handle it if I don't stomp on it all the time?

take the trans with the donor engine, its a HD trans.

if you have the funds send it out to be rebuilt. 4 th gear hub likes to strip out in the older trannys, 97-03 i think, its worth changing that.

and get headers for when you do the swap as well.

what kind of miles and year are the engine and trans?

if its your dd, id suggest no cam or something small

my xp car eats through gas around town, my non cam car just sips gas.

eventually your trans will eat itself with a cam

Don't listen to anyone and top swap the car.. I top swapped mine when I had it and it was beating L67's freshly built with a 3.4 pulley and cam.

My top swap was a basic swap, no cam or smaller pulleys. Just a supercharger with the higher compression.

Once it was tuned correct, took a bit but it ran very nice, loved it.

My trans held up fine after the swap. The trans was rebuilt at 80k and the swap was done around 95k miles and I sold the car with about 18k miles on the swap. But if yours hasn't been re-hauled recently it would be a great idea to get one built with the needed stronger components.

Ok thanks for all the input. I really do want to do the top swap but swapping engines would be easier. AHHh im still going to look through it

Any questions about the swap let me know, I'm never on this forum anymore so just shoot me a PM.
