Power Steering Leak - 2004 Grand Prix GT

Hi All,

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT, which has been leaking power steering fluid for.....longer than I'd like to publicly admit. Belle Tire told me I needed a new rack and pinion (no Magnasteer). Last weekend, I had it replaced. My mechanic told me that it would still whine for a while after the work was done, which it has. However, I noticed that I am also still leaking fluid. Could someone please give me some insight on what other components could be the culprit?

Thanks,
Thomas

all there really is, is the pump and the lines to the rack from the pump. clean it up, put car on ramps or jack stands, start it, and look for the leak. the boots on the ends of the rack if they are leaking the seals are bad.

this was a new rack installed?

SOmetimes it is both leaking (pump and rack), I just replaced both on my car at 165,000, althogh the rack was a reman. only 3 years old, it was leaking out both tie rod boots. The pump was leaking at the shaft seal. Also on the whine, if it was bleed properly, there should be no wine, wine means air in the fluid, and air in the fluid mean lack of lubrication. IF youre is still wining, lifts the front wheel off the ground, remove the fill cap and turn the steering wheel all the way one way, and back full the other way untill the wine is gone, then check your fluid to proper level. I will tell you my car had no wine after about 10 cycles, but the fluid was foamy, I let set a while and then repeated the procedure. I would not have driven the car if the pump was wining.

Thanks for the replies.

@scotty - I think it was refurbished. I got it from AutoZone.

@quicksilver - I believe it was bled properly. The whine is gone after I put more fluid in, and I'm sure it's still leaking.

It does look to be leaking less than before, so maybe the pump, lines, and/ or seals need to be replaced as well. I'll check it out. Thanks for the tips!
