Pointers for transmission swap

In attempts to fix my car's persistent acceleration problem, I am going to be swapping out the transmission with one I got from the junk yard that has 117k miles on it. While it is out of the car, is there anything I should pay special attention to (Seals, solenoids, etc.)? I want this to go seamlessly as possible. Also, any recommendations for how to do the trans swap? I plan to drop it out through the bottom.
 


Well what year is the trans from? Generally you could replace all the solenoids, or just the main problem solenoid if you'd like which is the PCS. If 03 or older the 4th clutch hub really should be changed which is a bit further in but still not too bad. I did it on my own with no prior knowledge except the help from this forum. They'll cause no 4th gear and that can happen anywhere as early as 120k to 200k usually. Pcs's can go at 80k sometimes.

As far as the swap I assume you know the basics like disconnecting the rack and supporting the motor from above.
 
1998 (Same year as car). I don't wanna pull the transmission apart, I will probably be rebuilding my other one. I just don't want to hook it up and a seal be bad (since it was sitting on a wood pallet for so long). Is the PCS on the outside or will that involve doing internal work?
 
Well first off, don't install a trans that has old common failure parts if they can easily be replaced, whether its rebuilt or you replace them. The PCs can be replaced very easily when its out of the car. The side pan has to come off, and its right there. I reused my gasket and no leaks. But to be safe a new fel-pro gasket is pretty inexpensive. But I'd hate for you to install the trans and let's say 4th gear goes out. Or is out already. While its out of the car, its the time to replace parts or have it rebuilt.
 
Doing it on your back takes 3.5 hours if done right.

First thing I'd do is search on my username and "ea sy" without the space. You'll find step by step instructions for swapping a transmission and you'd also find the 4th clutch hub fix as well. Expect it'll take you 6-8 hours your first time.

With the instructions and general tools, maybe a buddy or two, you shouldn't have any problem doing the job. If you'd like to know some special tools that it'll take.. the most special of them would be:
Jackstands
about 2-3 feet of extensions

Thanks for the tips and the guide. So if I were to do the 4x4/chain method, how exactly would I brace it against the fenders? I am afraid of bending them. I just can't picture exactly how you place the 4x4 there.
