Plugs and Plug Wires

I recently ordered a new set of plug wires from TDCRacing here, as it became frightfully apparent to me that my car still has the stock wires at 102xxx. They're all gummy from before the valve cover gasket was fixed, and just generally look like crap. So, I'm replacing those.

I don't know what plugs to use, and what to gap them at. Obviously performance is important, but I do a lot of highway driving, so I wanna keep my MPG as high as possible. I've gathered Autolite 605's at .060, so far.

Also, I'm not quite sure how to go about replacing the spark plugs.. Are the silver heat shields removable, or do I just need to twist the boot out?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm still learning, and everyone here has been incredibly helpful so far.
 


Wow! those things have a lot of miles on them!

You are 100% right about the plugs and gap! And also about the heat sheilds. You don't need them for my plugs BTW :) .

It can be done with fairly easily with a socket and ratchet. Just reach around to the back from the passenger side if you have long arms like me. Other wise get to it how ever you can. And it's a lot easier if you do it while the engine is cool.

Ok, so the heat shields will twist out as well, and I can just leave those removed? That would probably make putting the plugs in a little easier..
 
Yes it actually does a little. And yes you can leave them off. The boots that my wires are made with can withstand like 700* constant and around 900* flash if I remember correctly.

Gotcha. Much appreciated. As soon as the wires arrive, I'll hit the Auto parts store for a set of Autolites and a gapper tool.

i need to fix my old set of taylor wires so i can put them back on. the stock wires just look boring.

I agree. Since I took off the engine shroud for cooling and noise purposes, it's been looking a bit dull, so I sprayed my intake piping on my cone thingy, and the crossbraces with some heat-resistant engine enamel. I'll probably do the dogbones when they come off for the spark plugs and plug wires.
