Please help. Why am I stuck in park?

So today my car decided that it wants to stay in park. I am able to release the shifter by pushing down on the shift lock release button but as soon as I throw it back in park it gets stuck. A year ago I had the key stuck in the ignition switch problem that some of you had but that was fixed by replacing ignition wires. So I'm clueless as to why the gear is stuck now.
I have a 2001 grand prix GT. any help is greatly appreciated.

I had this issue, i fixed mine by going to a salvage yard and getting the wires that connect the shifter to the car itself, something is not connecting right as far as it sounds. the wires im talking about are underneath the shifter, should only cost like 10-20 bucks from a salvage yard for another

Locate the instrument fuse panel in the glove box. Check if the BTSI fuse is blown. I had the same problem.. it was due to a BTSI fuse blown.. If it's blown, under your hood in the main fuse box you should have spare 10amp fuses.. just take one and replace the BTSI fuse.

i had this same problem on my 97 GTP and you know what i did.......... took off the shifter trim and pulled over that little white plastic piece in there that holds it and shove a small shim in there and it worked fine. only thing is you can move it in and out of park while the car is off, its still like that i didnt know how to properly fix it and i dont have a shift lock release.

I believe what you are referring to is the white solenoid. If so I would be concerned about that. If I were you I would test it to make sure it's not powered all the time. If it is it could drain your battery and possibly cause heat issues.
