Passenger CV Axle Help

Ok, after extensive searching, I came up with this thread:
http://www.grandprixforums.net/showthread.php?t=61218

So that IS the axle I have in hand, but this is what my passenger side looks like. 20160913_070829.jpg

So, what the heck is sticking out of the differential? And how do I remove it?

All stock, axles replaced 4 years ago without issue.

Thanks,
Jon

Answer: axle shaft, no need to remove it.

The clip on the end of the axle looks ok, but the seal looks like it has been leaking, best to get a new seal installed before installing the cv/axle.

Hey Quicksilver,
I'm confused. Looking at the axle, from the other post, it is male on both ends. Every parts store website I've checked shows that the passenger side CV axle is male on both ends. Driver side is male at the wheel, female at the trans. Are you sure that shaft is supposed to be there? Is there a coupler or something that goes between the Trans and axle on the passenger side?
Thanks,
Jon

Can you push the shaft back in?

There is a long shaft that goes through the whole tranmission and can pop out when changing axles. The other end will go into the drivers side axle while the part sticking out should be inside the diff in the transmission itself.

Hmm, ok. I'll pull the driver's side. If the shaft did slide, then there shouldn't be a stub sticking out that side.
I'll post back tomorrow after pulling the driver's side.

Yes, the trans is original. The only work done had been to replace both CV axles and the wheel hubs. Did that about 4-5 years ago. Simple to do if I recall correctly. I did the trans seals at the same time.

I'm thinking there is a much bigger issue here. That looks like the end of the driveshaft that should be internal to the transmission. You should never see that on the passenger side as you are. The only way I believe that can happen would be for the diff pin to be destroyed and the driveshaft would have separated from the drivers side cv axle as well.

Head over to the driverside and see if the cv appears to be attached to the trans.

Hi everyone,
Sorry, had to work late yesterday couldn't get to it till this morning.

That is not a broken axle - the old one slipped right out.

Took off the driver's side down to the half shaft. I can't seem to get it out. Like the c-clip is locked in hard. This would suggest that the output shaft has NOT slid towards the passenger side.

I'm going to see if the parts store has the tool to remove the driver's CV. To confirm that there is a male spline on the driver's side.

Any thoughts?

The drivers side axle cannot slide toward the passenger side due to the differential pinion shaft in the way, also there is not enough splines on the end to allow movement that far anyway.

Ok, that makes me feel 'a little' better.
Finally got the driver's side pulled. As suspected, it looks like I thought it would.

So, back to the original question.
What is sticking out the passenger side and how do I remove it.
Also, at this point, I'm going to do my front struts. Any advice on getting loaded vs. bare struts and swapping the springs?

Any thoughts on this?
Should I try to yank out the shaft on the passenger side?

Thanks,
Jon

Woot! Woot!
Finally got that thing out!

We had freezing weather and snow last week, so it wasn't until today (in the rain) I could work on it.

Took about half an hour with vise grips and a slide hammer but it finally popped out.
Looks like it's a little stubby shaft, a shaft "coupler" of sorts.

Here it is:

So now that that is done, what does everyone think about loaded vs bare front struts?
