Painting the Pontiac emblem

So here's my emblem...

As you can see, there's a slight crack in the top left corner. What I want to do is paint the emblem black. Just the red part, I still want the chrome outline and star in the middle.

I've seen people blacking out there emblems with that spray dip it stuff but that's not what I'm going for. My question is, what would be a good way to paint it? Do I need to sand it? What about that chip? I'm afraid if I sand it, I might crack it some more. I was thinking of buying a new emblem and painting that, then replacing the old one with the newly painted one.

That is an option but I only wanted to do that if I couldn't paint it. Also, with that crack I'm not sure it will fit right.

I would get one from a junkyard, paint it and stick it on there. I'm sure it can be painted pretty easily.

The kind that uses hardener. Yes you'll need to sand it before painting. Toss the existing emblem in the trash.

take it out. wash and wax the indent. leave it.
