Painting Engine Bay Parts

Not sure if there is a thread already or if anyone knows the best way to go about it..

I would ideally like to paint some engine bay parts like I see in a lot of everyone's pictures. Looking to upper engine mounts and front support braces. I know they come already painted black. Anyone have some good ideas on how to make them look better? Should I sand and primer? Best way to get the new paint to stick? Clear coat? Any ideal number of coats?
 


If you want to use sandpaper you can, use some self etching primer, paint it a few coats until you think it looks good, then hit it with a few coats of clear. Everything that you want to paint should be pretty self explanatory on how to take off. For the engine mounts I would only take one off at a time otherwise you will need to pull the engine forward after to rebolt them
 
jUST CLEAN your parts good and scuff with green scotch bright pad, rust can be wire brushed, or even better if you have access to a sand blaster, even better. Any part that is not exposed directly to high heat like exhaust manifolds, brake calipers, you can use any spray paint you want, even the .99cent stuff is good for engine parts, prep is the key. NO grease or oil is the most important part, get some "pre-paint" cleaner, I have rarely ever used primer, just give light coats and will not have any problems. I have had best results with "KRYLON" brands, but you may have your own favorite.
 
when i painted my diagonal bars i sanded-primer-3 coats of paint. I used caliper paint for mine because its pretty strong and heat resistant.
