P0446- Cant fuel at all and some random issues.

Hey guys,

Ok so my dad owns a 04 Grand Prix GTP with about 160K. I have some issues with the car that I'm doing my best to fix with out bringing it to the dealer.

P0446- I think this has to do with some circuit but I honesty don't know where to start. Let me start by saying the car was just in the shop for the reason of my dad cant fuel his car with out it stopping every 10 seconds or so. We brought it in to the shop not a dealer. They replaced the Canister in the rear quarter and also replaced a sensor on the fuel pump, Pressure sensor I think? they also cleaned out the hoses on top of the tank the tech said. There at a loss and don't know what's wrong. They also put a camera down the filler neck and didn't see anything..They refunded us the money back which was nice. So the issue still remains but now the gas shoots out the filler neck a couple seconds after the pump stops, before it would just stop now the gas wont stay down, it never did this before..I think I replaced the Purge valve under the hood awhile ago at some point maybe that went bad? Any help on this would be great, do I have to drop the tank again? We have some other issues but we need to fix this first.

I hope it's not the PCM wounldnt anything else go wrong if the PCM went bad?

And no they didn't check the wires..Good techs I guess...No there was no gas in it. Right now there a brand new install as well.
 
theres two solenoids, on a top the canister, and one on the engine. canister one is a vent solenoid, the engine one is purge solenoid. i think the code listed is the canister solenoid. being you have a adding fuel issue.
 


Ok got ya, Would that cause it to shoot back out of the filler neck aswell? Before it was just stopping every couple seconds now when coming back from the shop it does this.
 
when gas wont pump, or shoots back out, thats canister issue or that solenoid most of the time, or a busted wire or hose to it.
 
Ahh ok ok. I remember changing that out one time and I had to buy a pigtail for it, GM had a recall on that or something I forgot but it was like 20-30$ for the harness. Ill check it out, if the wires appear to be ok" whats next?
 
not really sure other making sure the vent lines are not clogged up. your year might have one running up the filler neck too.
 
So I'm just looking for Damaged wires. Nothing with a multi meter or anything right? That code is for a electrical problem it seems...Ugh this sucks lol...How would I know if the line is clogged? or I should say how to check?

Ok, I took of the Canister and it appears they didn't change it but I tested it with a battery and you can see it closing and opening. My question now is it appeared open so wouldn't it have filled with gas ok?

Secondly I hook up the canister sensor and then the turn the car on to accessory mode not fully turning the car on and I'm not getting a reading off the connector from the car to connect to the canister, does that make sense? I'm alittle lost here lol
 
Nah it was Bone dry. I'm not to savy when it comes to multimeters but I think the plug came back with a reading of 11 something volts car off or on. Hopefully I tested it right lol. I didn't see any bare wires or anything. So I'm not really sure.

Does gas pass through there or something for that to happen?
 
i think its just to vent the tank as it fills up or as it gets lower due to use.

im no good with a dmm either. im no help there.
 


Yeah, could it be he Purge valve not working right? As I read more on the code it's says it trips when it senses to much pressure or not enough pressure? Maybe something blocking it? I may have to drop the tank?
 
Have you tried filling it slowly? My wife's 06 would did fill up and stop thing a lot and I would have to let it vent with the gas cap off and the nozzle in enough to open the flap and then I could fill it probably 2/3 of the way but have to go slow. It stopped doing it but I don't know why, never got any codes.

Your canister you say works because it opens and closes. But it sounds like it's not doing it while you fill up so whatever tells that to open or close isn't doing it's job.
 
Well not yet, we are a little scared because the last time the gas shot back out of the car and gas got everywhere, but yes the plan is to try it slow but it shouldn't be doing this ya know and it needs to get fixed.

Yeah the canister works when I apply power but like you said something isn't happening but from what I read that code will set off if it senses blockage or if not enough pressure I think...P0446 is the code...ugh I'm kind of stuck here..im not sure if I need to drop the tank or not. I'm wondering if the big charcoal canister down above the gas tank is messed up possible, maybe? Or if another part is causeing somthing.
