Overkill MAF upgrade - 6 wheel horsepower gain

Overkill

I've recently started putting together intake kits for the W-Body platform and its different engines. On the LS4 ASI, I include a larger MAF sensor that's 1/2" larger than the factory unit, plugs into the factory connector and is very cost effective.

Why the MAF upgrade? The LS4 uses the same MAF as the Series III 3800, the Impala/Monte 3500 and 3900 V6s and other Gm V6s. Note: all V6s. The LS4 airbox is infact the same as the 3500/3900 Impala/Monte. GM simply reused these components they deemed acceptable for a 5.3 V8.

Initial testing showed a 1 KPA reduction in intake manifold vacuum at full throttle, meaning the MAP sensor values were 1 KPA closer to atmospheric pressure at WOT, meaning less restriction in the intake before the intake manifold. Worth dyno testing to verify, so I did.

Results: 6-7 wheel horsepower gain when switching from an existing aftermarket intake to the Overkill MAF upgrade kit. This is on a bolt-on equipped 08 GXP with exhaust work only to compliment the intake and tuning. Stock intake manifold with the neck pinch, stock throttle body, all the reasons someone might say its not worth doing a MAF upgrade shows otherwise.

Once again, these gains are Overkill MAF upgrade intake vs another aftermarket intake, and both intakes were Overkill tuned. Gains would be higher compared to stock airbox and tune.

Best of all: This ASI kit is available on my website for less than the cost of typical aftermarket LS4 intakes. Not only do you get a full intake kit with a brand new GM MAF sensor upgrade, but you get it for less than the cosmetic intake kits on the market which reuse the small factory MAF currently on your vehicle.

My thanks to Nathan for the use of his GXP for the dyno testing, he got a free ASI kit for his time.

Hey Will...I had no idea about this, would tuning for the factory MAF and then swapping to this have any negative impact on the tweaked file or skew the MAF tables at all?

You'll want to wait the card maf uses different tables and will not play well with your factory maf curve.
Is this something that can be installed with another intake for those of us who already have an intake?
spectre sells the card maf adapter setups so it can be installed in line with whatever you're using

This was already a sticky but I'll repeat it again if you're doing this maf upgrade make sure you order a screen!!

Different maf, different table.

Different intake, different table.

Props to Will for taking the time to get pressure measurements. Really the only way to do it. 1 kPa is a lot in an intake.

Definitely needs tuning like any MAF swap

Been thinking about that. The K&N I've done before, just a couple parts to adapt and reuse the air filter. The CAI Inc would be just an air filter if one could squeeze the existing elbow over the MAF end, haven't tried it yet. I'll put this on my to do list though!

This isn't the card maf. No screen concerns, it comes with one.

OK. Devils advocate here. And an obvious observation. But why is this a hot air intake? Seems to me that this is no different than heat soaking a cone filter off the maf

Its a v8thing

Ha. :)

I had an open cone on my 06 GT , and only noticted bogging conditions and hot intake temps in traffic. But regardless. It seems all this intake does is make up lost HP from being a hot air intake, then makes it up with the larger maf?

I dunno. I'm just not getting it.... and the only reason I'm guestioning it, is of all the intakes it seems intense fwi has the best one out there. About as true of a cai as you can get , nothing fancy, and nearly $200 less than a k&n, no cutting needed and simple install...

Just wondering as I'll be ordering some sort of cai with my shift kit this week ,
