Overkill ECM/TCM - P0315 - Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned

After installing new Overkill ECM/TCM on a 2008 Grand Prix GXP and a few rough starts, car "appears" to be running just great but I've been babying it due to the check engine light staying on.

Read the code and this is the code I am getting. Searched threads, posts, etc but didn't locate anything. From what I've read on the web, a case re-learn should take care of this code?

However, the local GM dealership won't do it without flashing the ECM back to stock. They won't allow the car to leave their facility with a tuned ECM.

Currently struggling to find a shop that even has an idea of what I'm talking about. I'm confident in my car basic car knowledge but outside of purchasing a GM Tech 2 and doing it myself, I'm running short on options.

Long story short, does the P0315 translate to a case learn requirement. I was going to do the re-learn regardless but wanted to see if they were one in the same and be educated before I went anywhere.
 


This is a common and expected thing that happens with any replacement PCM. Will even writes about it in the packet he sends with his tunes, if he still sends them.

Even if you get one from another company, this is still something that happens regularly, the PCM has to learn the "variation" in the crank position sensor on the motor so it can get the timing right.


Look into an Aeroforce scan gauge under Gauges on zzperformance.com.

It's about 250 dollars after shipping, but if you have a tuned GXP, that'll be really fun to have anyway. It's a scan gauge that gives you a ton of operating parameters including Knock, Intake Temps, Coolant temps, Ignition Advance, etc... full list is on the site. More to the point it can do a case learn, so it's a good investment in having a tuned vehicle and will help you do what you need to do on top of just being a cool gadget.

Oh, it also reads and clears OBD II codes so you'll always have a code scanner with you too.

As a 2008 you'll want to get the "CN" model gauge.

Awesome information - you answered my curiosity about what programmer to look into. Local shop got the code cleared yesterday. Will didn't send any literature with my ECM/TCM. Stealership wouldn't do anything for me being it wasn't a stock ECM.

Are u serious that the Aero force gauges can do case learns? I was planning to get a Aero force gauge with tax money but didn't know they could do case learns. But that'll work perfectly as i have a set of tuned ecm/tcm that will at overkill is retuning for my car and I'll need a relearn

No, this is read as, "Overkill is greater than Diablo." The symbol ">" stands for " is greater than", is typically used in math to show that one number or expression is larger than another.

This is opposed to the " is equal to" sign "=" which would state that something is the same or "equal" to another.

An easy way to remember it is that the > sign is a crocodile and it wants to "eat" the greater meal, it wants "more" food, so the open end or it's mouth is always pointed to the bigger one. If you flip it around, it reads "is less than" and is pretty self explanitory.

The = sign is memorable because it depicts exactly what it means, 2 lines that are the same size and length, they are "equal"

On our cars, it can perform a case learn, turn the engine fans on/off on demand, and reset fuel trims.

Other than that it really just scans almost everything. You cant tune with it or anything advanced like that.
