overheating problem

I own a 1998 GP SE 3.1L and for some reason my car keeps over heating. It isnt a normal overheat either. It runs normal then will slowly go all the way up into the red once in a while, and back down to normal. :th_sick1:

At first i did the logical thing and put in coolant. nothing changed. so we figured my thermostat was stuck. I had that replaced and it ran fine for about a week or two. so i checked my coolant again and it was almost empty.. but i figured they had to drain a lot of it from replacing the thermostat. so i put in like a gallon more of coolant. and it keeps overheating idk what the problem is..im not leaking or anything...

any ideas?

I'll chime in, these might be terribly obvious but I have to ask anyway.

Did you bleed air out of the coolant system after all this work?
Any water in the oil (Milkshake)?
Does your radiator cap have crud all over?
Last time your coolant was flushed?
Still running dexcool or have you swapped to conventional?
What mix of coolant to water?
Ever have the intake gaskets replaced?
Any seepage from the intake gaskets?
Have you had the cooling system pressure checked to make sure there are no visible or noticeable leaks?

I dont check the 3.1 section as much as I used too, I had a 96 gp with the 3100 then swapped to a 03 3400, these were things I had to check when I had a issue with mine, turns out it was the plastic felpro intake gaskets I put on when I had my new motor on the stand. Well that and the temp sensor for my gauge cluster....

anyways reply with answers and I'll try to help you. Good luck.

Did you bleed air out of the coolant system after all this work? nope, they did everything and i didnt do any additional service work.
Any water in the oil (Milkshake)? my oil is good since the last time i looked.
Does your radiator cap have crud all over? cap is clean.
Last time your coolant was flushed? not sure when it was flushed, but they bleed some out before installing the new thermostat... (i would've done it myself, but them 3.1L's stats are such a ***** to get at)
Still running dexcool or have you swapped to conventional? i've got convential in there.. i know it says dexcool only but isnt coolant coolant? i dont think theres a difference.. maybe im wrong.
What mix of coolant to water? just store bough, pre mixed, 50/50
Ever have the intake gaskets replaced? not sure.
Any seepage from the intake gaskets? not sure.
Have you had the cooling system pressure checked to make sure there are no visible or noticeable leaks? um, not that im aware of but there isnt any noticeable leaks under my car and i dont smell antifreeze at all..

I'd check for air in the system, but that still doesnt explain the loss of coolant unless they didnt put any back in.

Dexcool will eat the factory plastic intake gaskets, just wondering if anyone had ever done them.

Just strange for coolant to disappear without a trace.

Check your radiator and prsuure going into it if your losing pressure than you have a leak that the coolant is slipping out of i had the same problem with my 95, going down the road it would be fine but at a stop the temp gauge would creep up into the red then once i started moving it would go back down

hope this helps

I would say a head gasket could be the problem. I could be blowing it out the exhaust or blowing exhaust into your cooling system and blowing it out your overflow. Just my two cents
