so my overdrive is pretty much toast, hopefully i can limp the car the 400 miles home in third, im guessing from the symptoms that the fourth gear clutch is toast, on to my question, what transmission should i be looking for?
its a 1997 regal GS i would like to get the better gear ratio and torque converter. could i pull a standard 4t65e and just re-use my differential, and cover with the axle to make it an HD? or what is my best (cheapest) option? thanks

More like the splines on the 4th clutch shaft. on to my question, what transmission should i be looking for?

No. Your gear ratio would change to 3.29 if you pulled a normal 4T65E and used your diff. That would require PCM reprogramming. If you can do the reprogramming, then go for it.

ive been driving around for around 1-1/2 weeks on my tranny, my 4th went too. I just drive around in 3rd all the time, tranny still works (knock on wood) and ive been heavy on the petal :p. One guy on here drove around for 6 months with the same problem before he had to replace the trans.

yeah i was thinking that it should be okay in 3rd. and yeah im looking at doing a pcm whenever i get the tranny rebuilt so the 3.29's are what i am looking for, so what years came with a compatible trans for my car? thanks

Where are you located?

lol normally im in the dfw area, however we took a min-vacation so im currently in the Corpus Christi area.

If you want to work with us we can get you everything you need, rebuild it, and install it at our shop. I know for a fact you won't find labor or material prices cheaper than my buddies.

We've done easily a hundred transmission jobs with the 4t65ehd alone, and we're a INTENSE recommended installer.

Crack open the tranny and fix it already lol.

well for an update. i ran the codes and came up with a p0300 and a few EVAP codes, found a cracked fitting on the Purge solenoid, and changed the plugs and wires (they were long due) and poof, car runs great no problem going into fourth at all. hopefully it keeps up the improvement!

purge soleniod wtf is that at??? once i get the gtp back on the ground im going to hopefully fix the 4th clutch shaft because im sure thats my problem but what is this purge thing you speak off?? also i REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY dont want to take the trans out it can all be done with trans and engine in car correct? 69 bucks from zzp for 4th shaft

WTF JOE? Why are you doing this, you are killing yourself. You just had the motor out, and you knew about 4th so why didnt you take out the trans too?

cuz then i wont have a car....... trust me if i told my dad there would be no gtp at this household..... trust me haha

Heres a not so serious question... Are you guys who have wrecked your fourth clutch shaft lucky to get 150 miles to the tank?
