• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Other stuff: My computer didn't work. Does now.

SaukRapids

I can't car too good.
I mentioned I used to work with computers. I game ..and forum. I used to author for a technical site, but that was an old life. I still know my way around the stuff. I built this last winter. It still needs parts too. So, in case you doubted my resolve with the CompG, this is where else my money goes. I haven't picked up a game in a few months with moving and that. Plays pretty close to a PS4 or X-BONE, better in some areas. Looking at another card to match the MSI in it. Should be VR ready then. That's a Thermaltake V71. Close to a $200 case, btw.

(Sorry about the dust)

Re: My other project (but not at the moment, and is it ever?)

Needs a Noctua NH-D15, and removed from the floor. The floor is the absolute worst place you can put a pc case, especially carpet with a bottom mount bottom inlet power supply.

Re: My other project (but not at the moment, and is it ever?)

That carpet looks pretty short pile, he shouldn't be in too much danger.

The dust is not as bad as some that I've had brought to me, I didn't know the color of it until I cleaned it. lol

What camp are you, AMD or Intel?

Re: My other project (but not at the moment, and is it ever?)

I've always run my machines on the floor. This one happens to have a case. A very nice case with removable, easy clean filters too. The inside hasn't been cleaned since spring and it runs 24/7.

That's a little AMD stock cooler there. It sucks, I know. Honestly, I wasn't sure they'd sent the right chip with a heatsink because the box was so small. Oh, it's a 6350 with an MSI GTX960. The 960 was a good value card when I was buying. I planned to run SLI anyway, so I wasn't shelling out $400 all in one chunk. AMD's new gpu architecture (die shrink) released earlier than expected. It wasn't due until Q4 2016. That is until ATi released their new budget VR beast, the Radeon R9 390. The price point is high there, but being VR ready while staying in line with a top of the mainstream pricetag has ATI ahead of the game.

There's doubts that NVIDIA's new chip, a tiny 16nm process, will handle overvoltage well without leakage. GP106's numbers look about as impressive as ATI's new line, but I already have a slightly older GM206. It's 28nm, but I won't be doing any hard voltmods anyway.

I really should go full speed PCIe x16 times two and swap the motherboard before running SLI, but meh.. I'll see if the frames drop enough to even notice.

AMD's got a new chip coming if it hasn't happened already. I think they might be finally gonna get out the rest home and release a completely new CPU. ..I know. I'm as shocked as you are they aren't pushing FX chips till 2020, but maybe money's starting to matter. Who knows.

Re: My other project (but not at the moment, and is it ever?)

After running a Crossfire setup, I would highly recommend not going the dual card route. There are so many games that do not support it and the ones that do usually don't scale very well, in some games the single card beats out dual cards. In a lot of games you do not see the benefits of SLI/Crossfire until you are past 2k resolution as well. You are much better off buying one good card than trying to use 2 slower ones.

AMD + ATI = FTW!

I've got an R9 290X with an A10 5750, MSI is pretty good at stuffing lots of power into a laptop. lol (GX60 3CCC)

I'm actually looking at the R9 Fury, because my next tower will be a mini-ATX and the R9 Fury is smaller, and liquid-cooled. That, with the next gen CPU after FX, and I should be set for a good long while.

I might upgrade the laptop APU while I'm at it, but again, gonna wait for their next gen. It's a beast as it sits now, haven't dropped below 60fps in any of the newer games that I have, including Fallout 4 with mods.

Re: My other project (but not at the moment, and is it ever?)

I'd have to agreed that SLI might not be worth it. Games not supporting it is development cost concern, I'm sure. That being said, the two new kids from ATI and NVIDIA both compare well in the budget arena. I think the 390 might have a small VR edge with float point performance, but I don't know much detail on either.

MSI is the only "performance" laptop brand I'd buy. A friend writes code for a hobby (I know) and works in the field. If he trusts his sh!t on an MSI, so do I. Lol

Re: My other project (but not at the moment, and is it ever?)

My pc case weighs more than twice that. It's 32lbs empty. I think fully loaded it's close to 50lbs.

Other stuff: My computer broke. Fixed now.

My computer went down for a while. I got it going over last weekend. I'm not a huge fan of Windows, but changing the license was easy.

Cleaning. Old board in there.

Rubber washers for between the fans and case.

20161220_203204.jpg

New cooler. (TYC part's a blower fan.)

20161223_133305.jpg

New parts. 32GB Ram installed now.

Ready to go.

Different color choice this time. The board's LEDs can change color and have motions to set, kinda neat.

It ended up being a bad processor. Pretty rare for everything else to be ok. It's up on a shelf with a 5' length of Dean's Wet Noodle grounded with a 1M Ohm resistor. Hopefully, no more ESD incidents. Lol

Not sure why the pic is sideways. I Might have to buy a new waterblock soon. I've had this block since 2007-2008 and the top is starting to corrode pretty bad. .

Mine is like this but not as bad. Galvanic corrosion ftl :(
Going to swap everything over into a bigger case and buy an EK Supremacy MX block.

How often did you change fluid/what fluid did you use? Properly maintained fluid shouldn't do that.
