Hello all! i have a 1994 Grand prix that now only has 1st gear.... i purchased it this way. im trying to get the vehicle ready for a long drive...

When the car is in park, neutral, or revers, I can hear a clicking, rattling sounds. ALMOST like grinding but not really. the sound i not very loud. if i put the car in reverse, it will make the soudns and not move at all no matter what rpm.

The noise goes away completely when i put the car in 1st gear or drive.

Has great power with NO slipping when in 1st gear.

When Drive or Overdrive are selected on the floor shifter, the car will drive in 1st gear. When up to about 25mph if i let off the gas and coast, the rpms will drop like its going to shift into the next gear, but it feels more like its in neutral. when give it gas, the rpms shootback up to the rpm range corresponfing with 1st gear and 1st gear works great.

When in manually selected 1st gear, the rpms will stay matched the corresponding speed just like a standard tranny. 1st gear has no slippage.

i can do some videos if it will help with a diagnosis

thanks!

Not 100% sure, I believe you have the 4T60 transmission. The reverse reaction drum/shell is a decent way into the trans. Those of us that have gone inside a trans will tell you it's not super tough, it's a lot of labor though. Might be easier to source another trans and swap it out.

thanks for the reply. i think i may do what you suggested. right now im only working with one arm for the most part because i broke my right wrist... i found a transmission in a local yard for $150.
