Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

I would recommend forgetting about the center dash speaker, most if not all aftermarket amps will not be able to power it anyways. You will not like the stock woofers in the rear so you will probably like to get a sub installed in the trunk.

Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

Here is what I did in my 06 gp with Monsoon. Took everything out all stock speakers gone, installed an Alpine 4 channel(100w rms/ch) and an Alpine sub amp( 500 w@ 2ohms) all new speakers (Polk Audio db 6x9 in the rear and 6.5 components in the front), 12" Alpine type R sub in the trunk in a custom box. Used a GMOS-01 to wire the New doubledin JVC headunit, then wired the left front speaker output of the GMOS-01 to the stock center dash speaker just for chimes only. Also had a PAC SWI-JACK for steering wheel controls. Did this because everything stock sounded like crap. The sub was not overly bassy and just added that lower end punch when needed. As for quality well everyone I know that heard my system said it sounded amazing. It did not have that window rattling thump that you can hear from half a mile away. As a matter of fact with all windows and doors closed you couldn't tell from outside the car that I had a sub playing in the car.

Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

Eventually I plan on redoing my whole speaker setup once I save up the funds to do so. I currently have the stock Monsoon system with the Pioneer AVH-P2400BT head unit.

I will be changing the dash, front door, and rear speakers. However, I dont want a subwoofer. (The stock woofer in the rear speakers will be enough) I have a budget of $400 for parts alone.

I am looking to get better quality and more power than my current stock setup. I will need an amplifier as well to power all of my speakers, I am not sure if I need either a 4 channel or 5 channel amplifier to power all of my speakers from the dash, front, and rear.

I will be having my a local audio shop sell me the parts and install everything as they did with my Pioneer AVH-P2400BT headunit. The owner I know told me he will match or even beat the price of the list I give him. Installation will be $100 and the parts a warrantied for a year.

What do you guys recommend for a setup? I want to make a list beforehand for the best bang for the budget I have.

I'm not sure how you plan to keep the OEM rear "subs" if you're replacing the rear speakers.

For what it's worth, I used this sub, (I didn't want head banging bass, just the aural definition of bass) this amp, these speakers for the front, and these speakers for the rear. I didn't do the math, but that should be around your $400 budget.

If the chimes are important to you, I believe you'll have to change your interface module, or you can piggy back the amps like I did. The one that works with the Monsoon amp runs them through the center speaker, which you won't have unless you get a five channel amp. I think an infinitely better solution would be to get component speakers for the fronts, and mount the tweeters in the "A" pillar trim panels, which will raise the sound stage somewhat. I think that'll be a project I'll tackle when the budget permits. I'd like to go with Polk speakers all around as well.

I had a 2400 BT which if I were smart and knew then what I know now, I would have kept. Upgrading to the 2013 "flagship" AVIC-Z150BH cost me some features. I'm now using a Nexus 7 for updated nav capability and a rather convoluted setup so that I can play my nearly 250 gigs of music through its superior music player. I could have done that with the 2400 and saved about $600.

you know the sub and mid range in the rear are one speaker right?

Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

6x9's aren't subs, and cannot produce the same sound a sub would. Even aftermarket 6x9's will still have terrible quality bass. For most people, it's enough, but if you want good sound quality you'll want at least a small sub in the trunk.

And $400 is a tight budget for 2 sets of speakers an amp and a head unit, unless you already have a head unit.

Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

Yes that is what I am saying. I dont want a separate sub.

The brands I am looking at are between polk audio and kicker both have a rear set of speakers that go up to 300w+ when accompanied by an amplifier and have built in subs. Although not as loud as a separate sub, I really dont care for having a separate sub woofer. The stock Monsoon is loud enough in terms of bass but crap quality, and I want to replace the Monsoon rears with aftermarket ones, I am sure they would be much better. I am more for quality over bass. I listen more to heavy metal music. The bass on my Monsoon sometimes overpowers the vocals despite messing with multiple settings on my head unit. The stock Monsoon system is showing its age or I blew something out. I want to redo the whole system minus the separate sub woofer.

So I am looking for advice for the best speakers and amp combo to power the new dash, front, and rear speakers for under $400 in parts. If you gusy can give me a list for ideas that would be great.

I'm not clear as to why you'd need the dash speaker after installing new speakers in the corners but my set up, minus the sub, should fill the bill.

If you've gotta have the dash speaker this is a nice five channel amp. But it'll blow your budget.

Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

I had some decent kicker's in my GP, 6x9's and 5 and 1/4. This was a few years ago so I dont remember model numbers.

My dad had Infinity speakers in his GP and they sounded much better.

Most of this is preference tho, what one person thinks sounds "good" or "reasonable" may sound way different to your ear. Try going to local electronic stores and listening to speakers to decide what you like.

For speakers I have had a great experience with the infinity reference and the infinity Kapas. The Kapas are woven fiberglass and sound amazing. I Have infinity reference tweeters, 6.5 and 6x9 in my car they sound amazing. I'm not sure how the bass is since I have a total of 24 inches of bass in my trunk haha... But I know the highs are great. I think they are worth a look at.

Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

24 inches of cone area don't mean anything with out a good tuned box and proper amp adjusments.

Re: Best Audio Setup For 04+ Grand Prix With Monsoon (Under $400 No Subwoofer)

Haha they are kicker comp cvr in a Ported kicker box with a 1000.1 amp that was made for the comps... They sound great.
