Oil question

Just bought a 98 GP GTP. Previous owner has been running conventional oil in the motor and getting the SC oil from the dealer.
Do you guys recommend staying with conventional oil or switching to synthetic? Which weight do you recommend?

Also, is the dealer the best place to get the SC oil or should I shop elsewhere? If elsewhere, what do I look for?

Hate to sound stupid, just want to do the best things for the car.

Thanks for any help.

oil is up to you, i run 10w30 mobile 1 in my GT, and as far as sc oil stick with GM supercharger oil that you get at the dealer.

stay with the gm supercharger oil.
i run 5w30 synthetic in mine since the motor is already broken in and its winter. 10w30 is fine to.

i run syn oil i use either penzoil PLATNIUM or i am currently using royal purple 5w30 or 10 w 30 up 2 you dont skimp on crap oil its ur engine man"! lol

Thanks for the input, guys.
I was planning or running synthetic, as that is all I have ever run in my vehicles and my motorcycles, but just wanted a little input.
Had no idea on the SC oil, so thanks a ton for that info.

Search feature works pretty good :th_thumbsup-wink:

Yeah, I know the search feature works and I know how to use it. It's the same on just about all the forums I am on. Just didn't feel like going through all the different answers that may be on there and all the different replies stating that the search works pretty good. Thought this would be easier as replies come straight to my phone and I don't have to spend that much time looking for answers.

Thanks to those that gave answers. They are greatly appreciated.

Just to warn everyone, I've tried lucas racing oil (was 20w50) in my race car but blew it up in ten laps. and that was a fresh motor, just put it in the week before. Thought it was kind of strange until my buddy toasted his motor after running the same stuff. So i was at the shop talking with some of the other racers and they were talking about this stuff and said it turns to crap and can't flow back past the lifter valley. Usually run the Valvoline Racing 20w50 but heard that you can pic up like 8-15 HP by simply using the Royal Purple products.

GM S/C oil is the best and only oil you should use in your S/C period. You're taking your chances otherwise. As far as I know, nobody has made anything recommended by Eaton yet.

As for oil, in my GPs run 10w30 Valvoline Conventional and I change it every 2,500-3,000 miles. Theres not a damn thing wrong with conventional, my family has taken a few motors past the 400,000 mile mark with nothing but conventional oil and 3,000 mile oil changes. I'd rather run conventional and change my oil frequently than to have a motor with synthetic and keep the oil in there for 10,000 miles, thats crazy IMO. This subject has been argued many times, this is where I stand though.

BTW, I run Synthetic 5w30 Mobil1 in my TB SS and the only reason I run this because GM factory filled it with this stuff. No matter what, that **** is out by 2,500-3,000 miles.
