Oil (?) on Spark Plug Heat Shield From ????

Beautiful weekend. Changed my plugs. The spark plug heat shield for #2 (I think, Rear, Passenger) was wet with what appeared to be motor oil.

Needless to say, I couldn't see back there. Any good guesses where it came from/what needs to be replaced?

Thanks again.

So I got fel-pro vc gaskets & grommets. I got the front gasket on, but ran out of time before I could do the rear. Part of the problem, I was confused by procedure in alldatadiy. Alldatadiy said when doing the rear, remove the drive belt tensioner. The picture was of a NA engine, is it different than my SC engine?

1) I don't get it, I don't understand or see why to remove the super charger belt and pulley tensioner. Is that necessary for my L67?
2) It's tough to see, but it looks like alternator may need to come off, even though alldatadiy made no mention of removing the alternator. Can the rear vc cover be removed with the alternator (generator) in place on a L67?

Thanks again!

you need to remove the bar from the blower to the alt if you have one, the map sensor is bolted to it iirc. and then evap purge solenoid is also bolted to the blower so it needs to come off, i have a 98 and there was no need to remove alt or bracket. but the 04+ you need to at least loosen it up some so the side of the vc will lift up. you can peek in to this area and see if the vc is touching the alt bracket or not. if its not touching your good to go.

to do the front vc the whole coil bracket/dog bone mount/ tensioner needs to come off or the cover will be stuck under it.

The front you need to remove the tensioner and coil bracket on the l67 iirc, the back you have remove the alt and alt/tensioner bracket. The alt/tensioner bracket has coolant elbows in them that are plastic and break off into the LIM or just disintegrate. Best to replace them with the aluminum versions.

Thanks for the replies. FWIW, I am finished with the front valve cover, and I put in alum. coolant elbows about a year ago--but will have to look up the alt. removal procedure again--I don't remember it being bad.

For backyard tinkerers like me, we also need to verify--I have come to expect Haynes to publish bad info, but still surprised when I get bad info from alldatadiy--which says remove drive belt tensioner but has nothing about the generator, but from looking at it I bet the generator has to come off like Russ said.

Thank again!
