oil in coolant resevoir

today i just noticed some oil in my coolant and the car smells like coolant car has 68510 miles on it and its a 99 gtp thanks for the help
 


Explain to me how the LIM would let oil into the coolant.

What kind of coolant are you running?

Dexcool? Because over time dexcool will turn into a oily sludge and look like oil is in the coolant.

Or you have a trans cooler leak in the side tank of the radiator.

Before I did my LIM gaskets my original *shudder* dexcool residue didn't look very much like coolant. Might even pass for oil.

this is all very vague, oil cant get into coolant.

but trans fluid can, via a broken trans cooler in the radiator.

coolant can get into the oil as well, but not the other way.
 
Oil can.. when things cool...it's super uncommon though.

Let's see this oil in your coolant. If it's reddish, it's trans fluid. If it's just a little gook...then flush and clean the system out. Likely it's just a little gunk.
 


dex coolant is dark. the antifreeze smell could be your heater core leaking. the floor will get wet if it is, and the windshield usually fogs up.

most of us flush the system out and re fill it with green or yellow coolant.
 
you need to lift the carpet up and look, theres 4 inches of foam under the rug, its soaks it up. if your smelling coolant inside the car the heater core is most likely leaking.
 


I have been reading about the "oil/coolant" episode. I took my 05 GXP in because of low coolant and the service manager said I had oil in my coolant but not to worry about it quite yet. Now I am feeling better hearing that the dexcool I am using can over time deposit a sludge that would look like oil in the bottle. Thanks guys. I didn't think I could get oil in my coolant and now I know.
