Oil filter worries?!?

skubasteve!

Hello there I am new to this forum so forgive me if this is a frequently asked question. I tried using the search function on this matter but couldnt come up with anything.

Anyways, my girlfriend has a 04 GP gt, and since her free oil change coupons finally ran out (bought the car at dealer and they threw in some free oil changes) Ive decided to change her oil myself. Im somewhat of a noob, but I have done oil changes on quite a few cars before.

The reason I am posting this is because I had read somewhere that the oil filter on the GP's is a real PITA to get off/find. Is this true? Is it easy to find? I just wanted to get this cleared up before I put it up on ramps in the freezing cold for nothing.

Any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Im assuming it will take about 4.5 quarts? Also what size socket for the oil pan, if someone knows off hand?

Thanks in advance.

Steve :D

It should be right in front and above the oil pan and the drain plug should be a 15mm if i recall correctly but dont hold me to it.

if it was tightened with tools it is a paint to get off, I have a cap wrench I start with, then go to a strap (the rubber ones that adjust)

I just drive my car up on the ramps and access the filter by laying in front of the passenger front wheel. And as mentioned I believe the oil drain plug is 15mm. You can spot the oil fliter from the top side by looking down roughly below the coolant overflow/fill bottle and/or fusebox.

Thanks for the help guys.

I put her up on the ramps today and found it pretty easily. Had to crank on the filter wrench to get it out though. All in all the first oil change on the GP went well, had her done and cleaned up in about 15-20 min.

Thanks again!

Its my girlfriends vehicle, but what is a does the cam swap involve? Benefits? Cost? Install process?

He was kidding. :th_laugh-lol2:

You need to do a lot more mods before you can do a cam swap, and it involves tearing down the top half of the motor (except the heads) and opening the front (belt side) of the motor.

He was joking that since you just tackled one of the easiest things to do on the car, that you were ready for the hardest thing. :th_winking:

Make fun of the new guy day huh? Bahhh... O well its my fault for falling for it.

Thanks again for the help.

Gotta start somewhere right?

What if she loves to cook and clean, and take care of you? ;)

Not to hijack, but thats my wife. By NO means a motor head, but man she sure like to take care of the house and me and our step son. I was a little put off by this when I very first started dating her, more because I was not used to it, someone so eager to make sure things were just so.

But over time Ive gotten a bit used to it but still find myself being EXTREMELY careful that I do not take advantage of it or for granted. She has very much influenced my life in this area as I find myself more and more trying to help out others, and make sure I return the favor to her as much as possible.
