Odometer Fix

Hey guys, couple days ago I noticed my odometer stopped counting, as well as the trip odometer. My first guess was a speed sensor but my speedometer still works so im guessing a odometer drive gear. Whats your opinion? Never took the dash out before so i’ve no idea what to expect, any recommend write ups or videos?

I know on my Grand Prix the trip odometer tends to stick after I hit the reset button so I have to hit it a couple times for it to go again. It will usually skip ahead a half or 1/4 10th when I do that or sometimes it will just start going again on its own. I don't recall if the odometer sticks too when that happens. Always been like that since the day I bought the car.

My old Grand Am on the other hand, years ago got a short or something in the cluster to where it would just go dead driving down the road. Temporary solution was to tap on the cluster lens or whack the top of the dash then it would start working again. It eventually got to the point where it wouldn't work at all when the dash lights were on so then I had to turn the dimmer all the way off & then it would work again, but unfortunately I wouldn't be able to read the cluster at night. I eventually pulled out the cluster & brought it to a place called Model Electronics Jersey. They charged me like $100 to rebuild the cluster & it worked perfectly for all the following years after I had the car.

My advice, try hitting that trip reset button a few times see if that does anything or try giving the top of the dash a couple whacks. Next step if neither of those work I would either try to find a junkyard cluster close in miles or contact a place that does gauge cluster repairs. I can give you the info for Model Electronics if you want & I can walk you through taking apart the dash to get to the cluster

I have the same issue. Speedometer keeps doing its thing, but the tripodometer sometimes sticks and as you said, needs the button pressed 1 or 2 more times for it to start working again. I've learned to live with it. LOL

Personally I'd skip whacking the top of the dash. These cars have junk tops on them and smacking them just increases the chance of it cracking if it hasn't already. If hitting the potholes in Wisconsin don't make it move then it's likely toast if the trip odo trick doesn't work.
