Noob needs help with L32 swap into GT

Just finishing swapping a L32 into a 02 GT and need to tune the pcm. L32 came out of my 99 GTP which got written off after asshat ran a red on me. L32 was running an Overkill tune on a 03 pcm (because gtp had 05 gtp tranny) --- I would like to transfer the engine tune to the GT's pcm (will be using the GT tranny). I've got a HPTuner but have never got around to figuring out how to use it. The GTP is gone, so in order to read OverKill tune-- can I put the GTP's pcm in the GT, then copy the Overkill tune to my laptop? Then after, put the GT pcm back in and transfer Overkill tune from the laptop to the GT pcm? I read that you can use the comparison feature in HPT to overwrite one tune to another...is this right and is it hard to do? Anyone know of a walkthru or video on how to do this?

L32 from a 99GTP? Was the L67 swapped out for the L32?

You're overthinking the tune a bit. Since you have HPTuners, it should be fairly easy. To start your tune, you should be able to use the stock GTP tune and transfer your transmission settings over. That should be enough to get you started, then you can custom tune from there.

If you really have an 05 Trans and an L32 (3800 Series III, Supercharged), you could more than likely just copy an 05 GTP tune to your PCM. You should be able to find the stock 05 GTP tune on the HPTuners repository.

The L32 is from an 06 GTP, which I had swapped into my 99 GTP along with an 05 GTP tranny which had 3.29 gears. I had to run a 03 pcm to allow the 05 tranny to function properly-this was tuned by Overkill. Even though both trannys have 3.29's, I've been told that 05 Tranny tune won't work on the GT due to different valve body configurations--would it even function if I tried using this 03 pcm temporarily? The L32 has 1.9 rockers, 42 injectors, Northstar t/b, 3.3 pulley and SLP headers (all tuned into the 03 pcm). Need to have car running for Monday so looking for quick solutions.

Other question I have is my laptop battery wont hold a charge for more than a few minutes, if I used it plugged in instead while doing the tuning, is that too big of a risk to bricking my pcm ?

you can plug the laptop is while reading and writing to a wall outlet no problem. scanning it will be a issue later on with out a good battery. i found one new on ebay for my laptop for 13 bucks, holds a charge for over 2 hours scanning and flashing.

HPT can not use the laptop with it plugged into a wall, DHP is another story.

HPT draws power from the vehicle and the laptop, it's very possible to brick a computer and fry the MPVI doing it that way. HPT will not warranty or repair it if that happens.

I decided to throw in the Overkill pcm to see if the motor would fire up-- surprise--it did! Ran pretty good, threw a p0134 for o2 sensor, but that could of been because I restarted it a few times trying to fix a leaking injector. So last night I was playing around with my HPTuner, practicing how to do the comparison tune feature, but it seems I can't get it to save the file. I opened the file I was going to use, then opened the stock 02 GT file in 'compare'. I then opened 'comparison log' and right clicked on transmission and chose 'copy over all differences'. It seemed to copy the files but there was no option to save file, I could only save when I closed the program when it said 'changes have been made to this tune, do you want to save them?'. But when I opened the file it doesn't appear that the tranny changes were made. Am I doing this wrong or do you need to use credits to do this? BTW.. I just updated to version 3.2

I bought a cheap AC inverter, plugs into a regular 12v socket and has a single 120v outlet on it... it's 140w IIRC and only cost me 20 bucks.

Just me putting in my 0.02.

lolz...

You know I plug the entire car into a wall outlet every time, right?

Gotta love small, mounted battery chargers in the engine compartment... :D

a charger to the battery is ok, but dont run the laptop off a inverter thats plugged into the cars power port. not safe to do that when flashing or reading.

Not gonna lie, I have forgotten to unplug the laptop before... Lol

But the charger will put out 25 amps during the charging phase, and the inverter only draws 15 amps.

Theoretically it should be fine, but better safe than sorry...and off boards are always the safest bet.

That talks about using an inverter plugged into the car, which I completely agree with. But plugging it into your house that should have a stable 120v 15 or 20 amp circuit, is way different. If you found something different that says thats not ok, please post. I've never heard that before.

First time I tuned I was **** scared of bricking so I ran an extension cord from laptop to house... Just sayin... And battery was a ok. Can't brick the thing if the laptop has power, if it bricks, it's because of some other issue, kicked the OBDII plug, etc... Just my $.02. But I agree, get a new battery, Fleabay is your friend there with that...

It's Cam.

What Cam says goes, Nick.

Or he gets mad.

He's right.

Don't go against it.

Finally, someone understands how this world should work.......... :th_shrugshoulders:.

I'm still waiting for my thermostat reply from you, I hope it's a good one too. I'm sure I come across as a know it all or a person that will correct someone if wrong. My deepest apologies if I happen to be correct or voice my thoughts. If I am wrong, please correct me and in some cases provide the detailed reason. I've been wrong alot and it's how someone learns.
