no reverse, clicks in P & N, works in 1st

Wife had the car towed home because it
"revved up and quit going forward when she tried to get on the freeway"
When I questioned her about the specifics, she clammed up a bit.

I don't know if any if the forward gears other than 1st work.
Tranny makes a clicking sound in Park or Neutral, engine RPM dependant.
Sound mostly dissapears in reverse and all forward gears, while sitting still.
Car will drive forward in first gear (while cold), but reverse does nothing.

I haven't had the balls to drive it around the block to find out if 2nd, 3rd, and such work. I did drive it 20' in D and it seened normal except a very slight clicking, but I had to push it back up the alley w/o reverse.

Is there anything I can check without removing the tranny from the car?
 


If it is that bad there really isnt anything you are going to be able to check or do without tearing the trans down. It sounds like some of the geartrain let go or a sprag is bad. The 99-02 models were hit and miss on geartrain problems and I have driven a few cars that do exactly what you described yours is doing and it will definately make noises
 
Thanks for the input.

I removed the tranny today.
I'll do some calling around tomorrow and figure out if I want to get it rebuilt, or just get a junkyard trans.
 
mine did the same, sounded like a chatter from the trans, now i dont have R D 321 when cold it will slowly go in but slip its way out, its fried
