Newbie! 98 GTP.

Hello to all, new to the site. Bought a 98 GTP last night and decided to find a forum to join this morning and ran across you guys.

Car has 204,000 original miles, engine just locked up on the previous owner. I have already located an engine, but am wondering if I should find a lower mileage tranny as well, he serviced it regularly, but it is the original. The mileage kind of scares me. But other than all that, it's a nice car. The paint is in great shape along with the body. Interior is pretty good but could use new carpet.

I have a few things I would like to do to it before I drop the new engine in.

Replace oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets LIM gasket, front and rear main seals, new water pump, new plugs, wires, headers, new engine mounts where needed, and maybe a newer tranny.

Can anyone else who has done this before chime in and give me a few other ideas on what I should do while the engine is out? Don't want to miss anything.

Here are some pics....

I have owned 2 other GTP's in the past and one GT, have always liked these cars, although I do have a bigger place in my heart for *cough* imports *cough*, I do still love these cars. I am currently working on a 91 300ZX TT project of mine, but it is a slow process due to a lack of funds at the moment. Bought this GTP for my daily because my last daily was on it's last leg.

This was my last GTP, nowhere near as nice as this one. lol

Look forward to being part of this site!!!

Welcome to the forums, sharp car.
As far as additional work while the motor is out if you're changing the LIM now would be a good time for a ported lower intake and a ported supercharger. I would also consider changing the CV joints.

Hello and welcome...just finished putting a motor in my 97 GT.

I have know idea how experienced you may be as far as doing work yourself or if this is something your going to take to a shop for, but if you have any questions I'd be wiling to help

as far as transmission... two rules of thumb come in to play.
If its not broken don't fix it. Or in this case, if its not showing any bad signs (you wouldn't know since the motor is locked) then don't fix it. who knows how much life it has left.

Other thing is, if you have the cash flow, go ahead and do it. Can only help

Yea, I have decided to go with what you said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I bought a shift kit, pan filter, pan gasket, and the Dextron VI fluid for it.

Other things I bought for it are a 3800 Performance PCM, 10.3mm wires, TR6 NGK plugs, Headers, Intake, 3.4 pully, High Flow Fuel Filter, Engine gasket Kit, Water Pump, HUD gauge POD, a downpipe that was custom made at a shop, has no cat or resonator in it, and some other odds and ends. My next major purchase would have to be a full 3" exhaust system. But not going to worry about that too much for now.

Bought another 98 GTP that was wrecked for my engine, need to put some parts up for sale from it now.

I hope to have this thing up and running in the next 2-3 weeks. The closer I get, the more excited I get. Haha

At 204K on a transmission, you can be almost sure that something is wrong. Especially if the previous owner "serviced" it regularly. See, the transmission fluid, after a while, has some clutch material in it, and it actually allows the clutches to continue to operate smoothly. Once you change out the fluid = slipping tranny. I've seen it too many times to count.

My suggestion, put another transmission in it, or have the one in their rebuilt. You're going through the trouble of pulling the engine, might as well.

Well, didn't take much to convince me. Bought a tranny out of a 98 with 119,000 on it. A little better than 203,000. Haha. Most of my parts are in, transmission should be here by Friday. Going to start putting all the new gaskets, headers, etc on the engine this week, and hopefully have it close to being done by this weekend. Getting excited. :)

Well, got her running a few weeks ago. Went and snapped these today.

Car is running great, don't have any complaints. Need to get a 3" DP and the ECM reflashed. Been using it as a daily to and from work. Cruises good. Everything seems to work like it should. Not bad for having roughly $2000.00 in it total. Very thankful for the ice cold AC, specially since its in the 90's.

nice GTP ! could you tell me how I could get an intake like that? Kinda car stupid really but I need something that isn't $300... Could you tell me the part names and if I could purchase at autozone? thanks
