New to this whole supercharged thing!!!

I just bought a 2004 GTP with 68k on the clock. It has a K&N intake system and I put a caliper on the supercharger pulley and its a 3.25". By what I have read that is too small for the setup I beleive it has. Is there any way to tell if I have head/valvetrain/cam work w/o pulling the valve covers off? I have read alot about the KR issue and was wondering what to listen for or how to tell if my cars got it. It seems to run perfectly and has TONS of power. It seems to be way faster than my 5.0 Mustang that I just got rid of. Also, if anyone has ideas of the first mods I should do to keep it reliable yet fun. If anyone can help I would greatly appriciate it. Thanks so much.

I have got a Genesys Scan tool...would that work or is there a special unit to use?

I dunno. Does it display KR? It'd be on the list of available values.

Most here use a HPTuner, DHP Powrtuner, Aeroforce gauge, ScanGauge II, or something similar.

I will have to check. thanks for the info tho, i really apreciate it. I am new to all of this forced induction thing. I just want to keep it fast and fun yet reliable. I would hate to blow it up right away lol. any other info/sugestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.

It's pretty impossible to tell if you have other mods without digging in to the engine. If you don't have a lopey idle, then you don't have a cam. Rockers need to be removed and if they're modified stocks its hard to tell by a visual. The rest needs to be taken off and compared to see if you have any porting or anything done.

I highly doubt you have what is required to run a 3.25.

I didnt think i would...is there anything i could do to run that w/o doing MAJOR work? colder plugs/free up the exhaust/etc?

That sort of stuff is only a few of the requirements to run larger pulleys than the 3.25. ;)

This should give you an idea of what you need:

97-03 Grand Prix & 04+ supercharged Impala & Monte Carlo SS

3.5 pulley totally stock car

3.4 pulley Colder Tstat & spark plugs, downpipe, Cold air intake (still could have KR)

3.3 pulley all of the above plus a VS cam, SS intercooler, or headers

3.2 pulley 3.4 mods and a XP cam

3.0 pulley 3.4 mods and a fullsize intercooler or an SS ic and a VS cam.

Anything smaller than a 3.0 pulley will require a camshaft, headers, intercooler & injectors.

And those are what some would consider bare minimums for those pulleys. You should never drop a pulley without scanning for KR.

Its possible your car is a freak and is running little to no KR, there has been that before. You will never know till you scan. Info above is good reference.

Well just about everyone on here will tell u that u need a lot more supporting mods to run that snall of a pulley. Ur gonna need a good tune, defenitly some exhaust work. At least headers and a downpipe. When I first joined on here all I had was a cai and a 3.4 pulley and everyone told me I was crazy. Did some more research and found out they were right. Now I'm on my way to making it legit. The right way

Thanks for all of the help, I will look into it more and get some required mods. I will get it scanned and see if its got KR as well. Any good place to find cheap/decent headers and downpipe? Any info is greatly appreciated. THANKS again.

please take that pulley off. and please scan it. you could be doing alot of damage to your motor. with out a tune your not squarting in enough fuel to take care of that extra air coming in. so your probably running VERY lean. also your stock fuel injectors, if tuned, would probably be closed to maxed out at that level.

to run that pulley saftly, i would say, headers for sure, large cam-vs is not big enough, or an intercooler with rockers or a meth kit and a great tune. along with all the other small suporting mods.

get it scaned asap or take the pulley off. probably both.

Thanks for the info again guys. I got colder plugs/wires this weekend and a 180* tstat. also ordered slp headers and a hi flow cat and exhaust. i also found a stock pulley i have yet to put on just to be safe for now.

good man. with the headers you will be able to drop a FEW pulley sizes. maybe 3.5 with a good tune. but dont forget the tune, most important part.

Well you honestly could keep the 3.25". You got your headers, T-Stat, plugs/wires...now...go buy a full sized Intercooler...all you have to do is pull off the blower, set the IC and run the coolant hoses...and take off the bumper and install the H.E. You said you didn't want to do anything internal and pullin' off the blower to do a IC is a great mod. Or if you have the tuning ability I would run a large nozzled Methanol setup.

Seems like money isn't your issue lol, so I would say this...ZZ Performance A stage 2 IC is fine, but if you have the money might as well get a S3...it still has heat soak like the S2, but A LOT less. But honestly it is up to you. Then you could send your blower off to Green Bastard Products and have him port the GenV you have to lower temps to boot and more HP. And who knows...then maybe upgrade to some Roller Rockers and you'd have a 12 sec. car :D

After all is said and done you will need a custom tune so I would try and find someone near you in the WI area that can tune your car.

Hope this helps ya. ;)

thats also a great route to go and if i had the money myself i would take that route :D

it would deff be damn quick

I only suggested it thinking that if his 3.25" is a press-on he won't have to bother getting it pressed off and a stocker pressed back on...just savin' some trouble...FOR ONCE :p

Then after all of that...get a Shift Kit, new Filter and upgrade to Dexron IV Fluid unless you plan on buyin' a race tranny...cuz you might be needing one after all of those mods:th_thumbsup-wink:

yea cause its so much easier putting an intercooler on than pressing off and pressing on a pulley :p

i like the direction your going tho :D
