New to GTP and have major problem

Hi all, New member from Hoschton, Ga. I recently bought a 2002 GTP, it had an oil leak from somewhere on the passenger side of the car, but I figured shouldn't be to hard to repair, car seemed to run great. Well I drove it over 100 miles a day for a week, having to put in about 1/2 qt of oil a day, to keep the oil light out. On that 5th day, I took the family out for a ride, and got down on it a little, and something in the front of the motor went bad. we pulled over and it was pouring oil out from behind the balancer, and has a knocking sound coming from front of the motor. I added more oil and limped it home. Jacked it up and got under with a steathascope and traced the loudest sound to be coming from the timing chain cover around the balancer area. I pulled the belt so only the balancer would be turning when cranked, and the noise was still there. Pulled the balancer and it looks ok, but the front seal is where the oil was coming from.Pulled down the front of the motor to remove the timing cover, hoping it would be the chain tensonier making the noise. Well it all looks to be ok also (DAMN its deeper I think).
OK here is my question.... when assembled, the motor ran smoothly, just made the knocking noise that increased with RPM increase, will the motor run smooth if it has a broken crank or bad bearing ( figured since it messed up the front seal). ANY IDEAS ??

Next question is, I just found a 1998 GTP 3800 complete motor and transmission for $850. Will the 98 motor direct swap out for the 2002 ?
I keep seeing things about Gen2 , Gen3 ,different motors (L64 or something like that) HELP... EDUCATE ME !!:th_laugh-lol3:

sound like your motor spun a bearing. Does the oil look like it has sparkles in it?

that 98 motor is a direct fit.

all 97-03 GTP motors are direct fit.

its called a L67 motor

the N/A are called L36

and the 04+ are L26

The seires 2 motor is what you want and thats what the 98 motor is the seires 3 motors were 04+ cars.

Thanks for the info, I will probally just do the swap instead of digging deeper into the stock one, the guy is willing to split up the motor and trans, would it be easier to swap out the entire setup, or just the motor? Also will I need the computer or any other parts from the donor setup to make things work out easier?
Is there any problem areas I should take care of while things are out of the car?
Is there any section on the forum the gives the differences in the different year models?

Thanks again for the info.
