New member - drivers seat issue

Hi. My name is Don. Just purchased a 1993 Grand Prix STE with 133K miles. Excellent shape for its age. Couple of electrical issues I'm getting ironed out. My biggest issue is I need to replace the drivers seat. The seat back is at an almost vertical angle making it very uncomfortable to drive. I have not been able to figure out how to adjust the seat back. The existing seat is a full power seat with bunches of adjustments. Still hunting for either a manual or power seat. Any help appreciated. Would love to restore this car.

It has been several years since I got rid of my last STE and I would have to say that the seats were one of my favorite parts of the car, when they worked that is! I would try really hard to repair the seat instead of replacing it, finding a used STE seat won't be easy and you will regret going to a manual seat.
I doubt that the motor controlling that function of the seat has failed, it is probably an electrical problem. I would start by reaching under the seat and wiggling the wire connectors as you press the button to adjust the seat back. This might narrow it down to a bad connection. I would also suggest unplugging all the connections under the seat, checking them for corrosion on the wires and reassembling them. Sometimes just disconnecting/reconnecting them is enough to get your seat back working again.

Thank-you for the response. The problem I'm dealing with is that the previous owner cut the wiring harness for the seat controls and then installed a toggle switch to adjust the seat forward and backward. So at least that motor works. I've been trying to figure out where the harness was cut. I don't know if the motors went out on the seat that control all the other functions but forward and backward or what.

I bought the car for $1400 and it only has 133k miles. I don't want to invest to much money into it. It is a second car so I can cut back on driving my Chevy diesel so much and extend its life.

Welcome to the boards. It's good to see one of these still kicking around in decent shape.

Just wanted to point out that the seats are STE specific. Any '88 - '93 seats should bolt in, but the design and functionality (all the power features, which were all standard) are unique to the STE. The only thing that was optional was leather.

You mentioned the previous owner cut the seat controls. Have you tried taking the center console compartment out and tracing the wires from the lid back towards the seat? I can't remember where the wires connect from, but you may be better (and cheaper) off swapping the lids instead of the seat if cut wires are your issue.
