Need some detailing advice.

Now that the weather is getting better/warmer I'd really like to do some work to correct the paint on my 01 GT. It came from Oklahoma and when I got it was covered with this real fine dust ...almost like sand. The stuff was everywhere on the exterior and even on the interior. I was really careful to rinse most of it off before washing it but the previous owner must not have been as careful. There are very fine scratches everywhere. I bought a Porter cable last year but have yet to use it. I am comfortable with doing large areas but am unsure on how to do areas like the pillars? I see people using blue painters tape. What needs to be covered by the tape? When doing panels can i go right to the edge?
I only have the large pads, maybe I need to invest in some smaller ones for these smaller areas. I'd really like to get the paint looking better but I don't want to damage anything in the process. Thanks in advance!!

First - When I use blue painters tape with detailing, I cover the rubber seals on the doors etc. I have a porter cable as well and for the smaller areas I go by hand. To clean the dash and if you have leather interior, I would use Murphy's Oil Soap first to get all the grit and grime off of the interior. Then I would go back over with Meguiar's Interior spray (it has a low gloss and does not leave everying slick feeling). Also in restoring the paint I would use the liquid polish compound (Meguiar's), the clay bar treatment, then polish and then wax. Also if you choose to use the Murphy's use a real diluted solution or you will wind up with a film on the interior. Use a mixture of 1 part Murphy's to 10 parts water, just enough Murphy's to give the water some suds.
 
you can clean it up by hand with some rubbing compound you dont necessarily need a buffer and you could use a clay bar in certain areas
 
As they said above, tape all the black rubber moldings off.
You can go to the edge, just watch that you don't catch the pad on corners and such so you don't rip them.
Make sure you prime your pads too before you start. That way you don't waste a whole lot of product.

Idk if you have any products picked out, but I have gotten into using Poorboy's World and it is great stuff!
Very inexpensive and the stuff is amazing (and it smells good too!).
Meguires #26 Yellow is a good everyday wax too.
 
Thanks for the tips!! I'm hoping to be able to do a good paint correction on the car this weekend, weather permitting. I'll try and get some good before/after pics.
