Need help selecting torque converter for turbo car

I have a z7 intercooled turbo kit on a stock L67 motor (only mod 1.95 yella terra rockers and l76 springs). I'm using a Precision Billet 5858 cea turbo.

The car is mostly street with a rare visit or two to the drag strip. Primary use is street.

I can build 11psi on the brakes with a stock L67 258mm converter with this turbo (slightly smaller than what most go with), and am happy with this setup overall. A tad higher stall wouldn't be bad either, but want to keep it tight for those fun highway pulls..

I expect 425-450 whp out of this max when pushing it harder, but lower boost in daily driver form (~350whp)

I am concerned with cracking a flexplate, and would like to use a meizere billet flex plate when I install my built trans, which requires me to use a 245mm converter pattern. Seems like a properly reman'd stock GPGT 245mm torque converter will stall right where I want it. The big question is, will it handle the power reliably without balooning? I do not plan to lock the TCC at heavy loads, only cruise.

I'm trying to avoid the cost of a billet cover torque converter if I can, but don't want to be tearing the car apart to repair a damaged torque converter because it was not up to the task.

Any advice?

Thanks guys,

Jeramie

I suggest a low stall for turbo applications. High stalls work better on a sc build. I know this from experience.

I am using a meziere that I drilled to fit a 258 converter so that is a solution for you as well.

I'm using a cartuning 258mm converter stalled at 2700 and like it so far. Way better than my ati3500 I was running!

stock HD work great. Stock GT converter if you want a bit more at the line.

You can get the HD converter to fit on a mez without much issue.. just bore out the holes a bit wider, or make it a dual pattern.

Hmmm, I might just stick with a 258mm HD converter then.

So the meizere flexplate just needs to have the holes elongated a little?

My stock GTP converter flashes to about 3,100 on the brakes at 11psi. See this vid: Precision 5858 spool on the brakes. - YouTube

The lower number on the aeroforce is rpm, shows a tad over 3,100 rpm. I'm fine with that, and think I would rather keep an HD converter.

This funny will help me sleep well tonight.

Not sure why this is a funny..... people may have there own opinions but from my experiences a high stall on a street driven turbo car is bad. I had a 3500 stall and 2.93 gears and the car barely moved until the rpm's got to 3,000-3,300.. this made a tone of high and constantly battled trans temp issues. On the track by the time the high stall would flash I was at full boost and it was hopeless to move I would just blitz the tires off.

The new setup I have 3.52 gears with a 2700 stall and is way better on the street. It feels like it wants to move now instead of being lazy. Have not been to the track on this setup yet.

Now for a sc car your power is instant so you want the converter to slip initially to get you moving a bit or your gonna spin horrible. Even here though for street driving I say no higher than a 3,000 stall.

This is my logic and my opinion.....

And for getting the meziere to fit a 258mm I had a old stock flex plate that had both patterns in it so I lines up the 245 holes and then marked where the 258 holes were and drilled it. My m:eziere now is a dual bolt pattern :)

I just bought a trans for triple edge performance and recieved it today , i got the meziere flex plate , and precision industries 3000 stall for turbo applications , was told this would be the best setup

Jealous of your $$$ Precision torque converter!! Definitely suggest this one if you don't mind spending the $$.

I have a zzp 3000 stall I plan on running.

Wow you both are close to where I live. Just noticed haha.

I'd love to see a turbo GP in person. I'll probably stick with the SC. Let me know how the 3000 stall works for you. I'd been considering it for my next build

Just an update, I ended up going with a billet cover 245mm converter from TEP, stalled a bit tighter around 2800-3000. He says most turbo guys he recommends a 3000-3200, but I'm not running a huge turbo and wanted a tad more efficiency for my DD..

Will run it with a new GM flexplate and call it good.
