natural gas injection for diesel

a friend of mine was telling me about a natural gas injection kit he could get for his ford f250 diesel. he said it would improve fuel economy and make more power, but I told him it couldn't because natural gas has a lower btu rating than diesel. am I right or is he right?

yes you are right, NG is almost half the btu of diesel. only thing that is close is jet fuel
 
Reading is fundamental.

E85 has %72 percent of the BTUs of gasoline, so that must mean E85 can't make more power eh?

The CNG engines can make a ton more power because even though natural gas has way less power, you can cram a ton more into a cylinder needing only enough diesel to reach combustion and ignite the gas.

You can also get better "MPGs" at highway cruising speed because diesel is being substituted for another much cheaper fuel even if you need 2x as much to keep the same power.

The kits are not cheap, are difficult to install and tune for, and unless you drive 100k highway miles a year, it's simply not worth it.

Yea but what do people get with e85? 10 mpg? Sure it costs less but that doesnt increase your mpg it increases your cost per mile and at the rate your still spending more money.

The point with that comparison was that less energy doesn't mean less power.
 


I looked up the octane rating for CNG, turns out its like 120+ so it could make more power. I dont know a lot about diesels, can you advance the timing like gas cars to make more power? I dont think it is more efficient, but CNG costs like 1.50 a gallon so it is a lot cheaper than diesel.
 
It's not more efficient at all, but if you can run 25% diesel + %75 CNG you still save some money on fuel if you are not loading down the engine, like when cruising on the highway.

Or you can increase HP by injecting a lot of CNG, with enough diesel to ignite it. But you can't get the best of both worlds.

Well it's water meth in his diesel it's wicked ****. And I can post a link to a turbo e30 that loves it's meth. That's how it keeps intake temps down for power
 
I didn't read any of this. It works though. It helps burn the diesel more completely thus the improvement in power/economy.
