I have a 99 gt THe car runs great but when I first start it up the change oil light comes on for about five minutes and then goes of. I had changed my oil 2 times now. Once I start driving the car for about 20 min at a light or idle the oil light comes on but once I pull off the the goes right off as soon as I hit the gas. The motor doesnt make any noise and I dont have any lack of power or hesitation when the light comes on The only thing I did notice is that sometimes at a light I can smell burnt oil. Any idea what could be the problem?

Well if your sure the oil level is not the issue it could be the oil level sensor.

If you're talking about the "Change Oil Soon" message, you need to reset the oil life monitor when you change your oil. It doesn't just "know" that you changed it.

but i don't know where the reset button is we can not find it lol. so can anyone tell me where it would be? my car is a 1997 grand prix v6 4dr. do not have a manual.

The reset button should be on the DIC but it's a 97 so I'm not possitive...didn't someone post something to do with the brake pedal to reset the oil light once? It seems this has been asked before and I don't remember exactly.
Who has a 97 here?
If you do have a DIC go thru the modes w/the mode button until you get to oil then press the reset button and hold it for several seconds until it reads 100% and that's it.

to the right of the instrument cluster, the drivers information center. it shows your gas mileage and other stuff.

Hey Amy,
I tried to reply earlier with my cell phone but it didn't work.
Yes the DIC = Driver Information Center there are three buttons vertically and it gives you information on gas mileage oil life etc. The mode button toggles thru different information, there is a reset button that you can reset oil life, thats where I reset mine at.
My car is a 2003, I'm not sure about a 97 if there is a DIC in that year.

If you don't have the DIC. Then you have to put the key in the on position (not starting it) then press the gas pedal 3 times until the change oil light blinks.

That must be it...I was thinking it was the brake pedal. I remember seeing that in a thread before but I couldn't remember where.
