My car drinks gas faster than I can chug milk..

hey guys, my 99 gt gp with about 155,000 miles gets about 14mpg...I have the digital display and thats what it reads....car runs great. I never step on the gas, I ride it under 2.5rpms just about all the time, and take it easy
 


i have the same problem with my gtp. is your car running any codes? i know mine is running o2 sensors, and ever since its has a real thirst on. but its only saying o2s because of my exhaust im sure.
 
Could be many different things....Is it giving you an engine light? If it was me, I would: 1) change out the spark plugs (check the wires for cracks while you are doing them) 2) Clean the MAF sensor and the throttle body (only use MAF cleaner on the sensor) 3) Put a can of seafoam through the tank next time you fill up 4) Change the fuel filter if none of that helps too much.....Could also be a bad Oxygen sensor but those are kind of expensive and it wouldn't make sense to do that first unless you are getting a code for it.
 
What do you mean under 2.5k rpms? As in, it never goes above? Or you stay constant around there?
Cause my car is usually riding around 1.5k at 55mph, and unless I get on it, won't go above about 2.5k.
 
hey guys thanks for the quick reply, sorry for the confusion, yes I ment wont go above 2.5k, I roughly sit around 1.5k when going normal speed like you. My CEL is not on, I did change the plugs, seafoam is a good idea though, good thought. Should I just dump it in the tank?, or thru the brake booster also?

Your call, I've done it both ways...Some say it ruins your plugs when you do it thru the brake booster, I have done it with new plugs and not changed them after, but then again my car barely smoked at all....I would run it through the tank first and see what results you get from that, make sure you do it on a full tank. By doing that, and cleaning your MAF and throttle body, you should pick up some mileage....If you don't you will at least get better throttle response back, when I did all that I picked up 1-2 MPG, can't remember exactly it was back in the summer
 


Ok thanks man, Ill be doing that this weekend. Hey noob question, when you take your car in for a "tune up" what does that consist of? Just the routine, oil, plug change?
 
Depends where you go, certain people have different definitions of it but generally speaking it would probably be air filter, oil change, plugs, fuel filter, PCV valve, some places will clean out your injectors
 
Usually it also consists of a huge rip off as well :th_thumbsup-wink: do it yourself, its simple, you save a ton of money, learn, and plus you can find any info you need on here to do the work by searching
 
leave your fuel filter on. grab a can of seafoam and put half the can in your tank when it's got about 2-3 gallons left. put the other half through a vacuum line and clean your intake.

then make sure your air filter is clean. if you can't clean it up, buy a new one. plugs and wires aren't a necessity, but wouldn't hurt. clean your throttle body too.
