My brake pedal lifts up, seems unsafe, but is this by design??

Hi Everyone,

I bought a used 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. The brake pedal is loose, but let me specify - loose in that the pedal can be LIFTED one inch higher than it should be with VERY little effort (such as a foot rubbing against it). This causes a problem when I drive because when I move my foot from the gas to the brake, sometimes the pedal is way too high, and I have to quickly adjust my foot to avoid near miss accidents. You might say "well don't accidentally touch it with your foot!" - while awareness of the problems reduces the occurrences, it still happens sometimes... and it's scary! So, if my foot gets hooked under the pedal, instead of bouncing off the pedal, the pedal lifts up a full inch and stays there, i go into a panic trying to get my foot back on top of it.

Anyway, the local GM dealer tells me they never heard of this problem before, so their conclusion is "we never heard of that problem, so it must not be a problem, it must be by design.” I tried to get them to find another Grand Prix with the same floating brake pedal, and then they look around the shop for another Grand Prix, but there's never one there to test (how convenient).

I tried to escalate this issue to a GM customer service hotline, but all they did was call the same dealership. The guy from the hotline told me "the dealership went above and beyond" to try and help me. That's bull****, above and beyond would have at least included verifying the brake pedal floats around on another Grand Prix similar to mine.

So every other car on this planet was designed with a solid brake pedal that stays in the right spot, but GM designed this car with a loose brake pedal? Can any other 2007 Grand Prix owners try pulling up their brake pedal and telling me how far it comes up, and if it stays there?

that seems odd... my gas pedal does this, but thats because its attached by cable.

have you looked at the pin where it connects to the brake booster?

It almost sounds like your brake booster itself is damaged or the hinge is.

I really dont recall my brake pedal moving anywhere near that much.

Update: Pedal doesn't move anywhere, there is hardly any play in the brake booster and the clip keeps the pedal locked onto the brake booster.

Its possible the clip has come off, which is very dangerous.
