• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Must give the car some gas or rpm will drop and stall.

Check engine on for P0440(had that code on before 5 months back, but disappear shortly after replacing my gas cap and didn't come back on till December)

In no way shape or form am I a mechanic, but i'm trying to learn.
About 2 months ago I had issues with my car stalling, when i try to start it. I had my replaced my Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter and Fuelp Pump Regulator(FPR, was replaced 2 weeks after the pump and filter, still i was still stalling).

After having my fuel pressure regulator replaced, I was driving home one night up a hill and I heard something that sounded like a cork popping from a bottle. I sounded like it was near my back tire near my fuel filter. When I heard that noise the car kinda skipped for a sec(had a gap in accelerating).

After that sometimes I would start my car and behind to reverse or drive forward and the car would be shaking like it wanted to stall, but giving it a lil more gas would clear that issue.

Lately its been stalling when attempting to start it, my dad told me just to give it some gas to keep it running. Alot of times I would have to hold down the brakes shift into reverse or drive while lightly holding the gas pedal to keep it from stalling. This doesn't happen alot, but when it does its at the wrong time, like leaving Atlanta, when everyone is getting off work.

I forgot to mention I do smell a faint smell of gas. Also a few times while driving on the Express way, the car felt like it was accelerating more on its on, not a burst, but it was obviously picking up speed, on a flat surface.

is the check engine is back on now? have you had it re scanned?

theres chance ts a vac leak causing this too. get a can of carb cleaner and spray all the vac lines around the engine, if the idle jumps up, you found a leak, also spray around the TB.

Yeah its back on. I had it scanned by a mechanic before and he gave me that code, same with autozone, i eventually bought my own scanner. Its always that P440

sounds like a evap problem, the code, along with the pop you think you heard by the rear tire. all that stuff lives by the gas filler neck tubing.

I'm learning to work on my own car cuz money is tight since I've moved into my own place, I've change my own fuel pump and filter and a few other things, didn't do the FPR. Are there any any guides on this site to do this task?

being your tight on funds, id stick to where the code leads you, the evap system, purge solenoid, or cracked lines back there. i have not had to deal with this my self, but i understand all that stuff is inside the d/s back wheel well, so all you need to do it take the back tire off and the inner plastic shield.

its also possible to delete it all together. but you may need someone to tune the code off for the check engine light.

i have been having the same intermittent problem..... not quite to your extent though.. and i haven't had the car die very often lately but it does still happen... also smell a faint smell of gas, usually after i shut the car off and get out of it.. and if i delete the code, and have over a quarter tank the code usually stays away but then it comes back after i get back down below a quarter tank again....

u also been driving your car like it has a manual tranny? :D

Post back here, the stuff you've done or plan to do. I'm gonna let a mechanic look at it, he usually only charge me $20 to take a look, once he charged nothing cuz he knows i've move out on my own.

Haha no my car has a fresh tranny in it.
I have headers, 3.5 pulley, inteke, self ported blower, shift kit, zzp fuel pump and fuel pump rewire, and an in-car hpt tune.
In the future I plan on an s1x cam build but that will be slowly done on the extra motor I have haha
be sure to post back whatever you find out with the mechanic!

I had a very similar problem on a 94 cutlass.. I ended up cleaning the idle air valve and its housing and it stopped the problem. Yours may not be that simple but hey, it's easy and worth a try..
