Monsoon rear speakers, any good

I have a 2005 GTP with the Monsoon system. Are the rear speakers good or poor. Is there an easy way to upgrade them?

they are made of paper and the glue becomes unadhered, or the paper becomes brittle and when the volume goes up it cracks. I would say it's a poor design, but those issues don't seem to affect everyone.
 


I've got infinity kappas wired to plug directly into the factory speaker plugs if you're interested.
You need to cut the tweeter wire and run them to one terminal and the woofer to another.

Before doing any kind of write up, the best thing to do when wiring in the rear, pay attention to which wires on the factory plug went to Woofer and which to tweeter. IIRC the way the plug on factory speakers works you can't really clip it off to splice in, but you can make your own wires that will connect stably to the wire harness.

Any update Sudden? You wouldn't think you would have to take the back seat out to replace the rear speakers but....
 


Yeah, I looked at it. It isn't worth it to me at this time. My speakers are OK I just thought I might upgrade them. I put speaker baffles over them and reset the balance. I'm pretty happy now.

It's really not bad but I did struggle on the 1st one I did. You pull a "T" handle under the seat on each side to release the bottom. Take out 4 (I think) 18mm bolts that hold the bottom of the seat back. Then you fold the seat back down and take out the 10mm bolts. This allows you the lift up the rear deck enough to reach in there and get the speakers out. Yes they come out thru the top. If you decide to do it, you will be happy with the results. The stock Monsoon speakers really are crappy paper cone ones.
 
There's multiple ways, you can even go through the trunk to get at them. A lot more difficult, but it's been done before. (this guy)
 
Revisiting this per request. I gather that Monsoon in many different makes/models changed to a 2 Ohm component system "later on." (04+ probably)

Wiring in any new 2 Ohm 6x9 component speaker should work and looks straightforward.

Does anyone know the actual output of the Monsoon amp?

I don't see the need to buy expensive speakers if the amps like 40w RMS, lol.

Probably just going to try this because it looks like a cheap alternative. Should be okay?

Is just get component speakers. Monsoon amps handle crossover by themself, so pushing sound through extra crossovers can seriously mess with your sound.

Take the car side plug while still attached to the speaker, trace wires to tweeter, label them.

If you want to keep your factory plug, use side-by-side connectors to attach.

They are around 40 RMS per Channel depending on which monsoon amp. Some go upwards of 60. Is advise infinity Reference speakers. They can be had for 150ish online for a full set of tweeters and woofers. They are a good entry level speaker for the monsoon system.

Looked around in there. 4 Ohm speakers I guess. I see what you mean about the wires.

Yeah, it seems towards the end, they were kind of just throwing in what the had laying around.

Also, from what research myself and others have done, the monsoon uses different impedance at different speakers, even though its designed for a two ohm setup. Supposition and best guesses have lead to the belief this was due to poor woofer quality, meaning the OEM spec speaker would not work well, either through sound blowout or distortion being a paper cone design.
