missing gear

I've been having issues recently with what seems to be the transmission trying to shift into a lower gear when giving it gas. I'll be out on the highway trying to pass someone, give it gas, and all of the sudden the RPM will shoot up to 5k but I get no acceleration. It feels like when dropping from 4th to 3rd that its completely missing 3rd and going into neutral. As soon as I let off the gas it moves back into 4th again. While this is happening the check engine light comes on for only for about 5 seconds then goes off.

Any ideas?

So I brought it to a car parts store and they hooked it up and said there weren't any codes on it...? I thought that even if the check engine light turned back off that it stored the code until cleared?

They do in the history codes. Most part stores scanners will not do it.

took it into a tranny place today and they're pulling an engine misfire code. They said they doubted it was the tranny but are thinking it could the catalytic converters? They said it probably is getting gummed up causing the engine not to be able to breath properly. They then quoted 6-800 to fix it.

Is this a common problem in grand prixs? thoughts or comments?

Thanks.

i never heard of a catalytic converter bothering the transmission, my car doesnt have a catalytic converter.

thats a lot of money to replace the cat. i bought a no cat exhaust with flowmaster 40s on it second hand on CL and put it on my old GTP. It sounded awesome but ran horribly without the cat. It was misfiring. So took it to the Quest exhaust shop and they quoted me about the same. I was like "800 bucks to cut off the down pipe put a cat back on?" Well, I had the cat already and the labor wound up being only 100 to cut and weld. Point is, you can just get a cat yourself and put it on yourself because they bolt on factory exhaust. Save a lot of money. The cat was off a parts car and the guy only wanted 50 bucks for it. Ran fine after that. Gas mileage went back to normal.

Just have to jack the car up and have some extensions and I think its a 13 mm socket. Its kinda weird laying under the car like that but if you have it up on stands on the frame of the car and the jack its ok. and the wheels chocked.

If that is actually the problem.....
