Milwaukee area people's. Good area to stay?

Hey guys I'm up here in Milwaukee and have been advised to stay away from 35th street and to go to one of the outside suburbs. Can anyone point me to an area near 35th but far enough away I don't have to worry that I'm not packing?

Hi Jeff!
I avoid the city when possible. I work on the north side and commute from 30 min north. There are parts that are ok, others not so much. I'm a country boy and just don't like the city.
 
I ended up stopping a cop and asking them where to stay. You know it's bad when there are 2 cops in a patrol car. It was funny they wanted to tell me about what kind of crime was in the area, and I was like that's great and all, but can you just point me to an area that it would be safe for me to stay.
