metal grind/rattle when hvac system is off

Getting a weird rattle/grind noise coming from the front of the car when the hvac system is off. sound goes away if i turn the sytem on. anyone had a smiliar issue?

That'll either be a need to have your AC compressor clutch spacing adjusted or you'll need a new compressor.

I'm having the opposite problem, but intermittent; get a grinding noise when the system is on, with metal shavings around the compressor pulley. Can you tell me more about adjusting the compressor clutch spacing?
