Metal Gas Tank Flap Broken off and Into Tank

Hi,

New here. 2006 Grand Prix GT.

Someone attempted to siphon gas out of my tank last night (they didn't seem to get any). I discovered gas tank cover open and cap hanging this morning.

BUT!....I noticed that the metal flap that is pushed in when you push nozzle through to fill up tank was missing. I can only assume it was pushed in and into my tank (Why someone would need to do that to siphon gas, I am unsure).

Question that I've already asked Service Advisor at Chevy dealer....but would link input on here as well is this:

Is this something that can cause problems? His answer was...that in all likelihood, no...that it would sink to the bottom and cause no issues. If any issue at all maybe occasional hesitation if it got near the fuel pump but that it was unlikely.

What do you guys think?

Edit: Reasonably sure it had this flap. Guy at work has an 05, has a flap....but can't be 100% sure mine ever did. I *think* it did.

Thanks,
Kevin

I would tend to agree that it would sink to the bottom and not cause any issues. I cant figure how they would break that thing to begin with though.

it quite possibly could actually have broken off and come OUT of the car... if they jamed a hose in there, pulling it back out may have caught the flap and ripped it outwards... (immagine sticking your finger in, and trying to pull it out)
