Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Loose connection? Being slowly driven mad!!

For right at 3 weeks now, the car has been shutting down in mid-flight so to speak.

I will be driving down the road and suddenly the car simply shuts off. Electrical power is still on, raido, lights, etc. I pull over and stop and it almost always starts right up again. I continue down the road and it does it again. Sometimes it will go 20 miles with no problem and then other times it will shut down 5 times in 5 miles.

Now, this situation is most often accompanied by the "Service Engine Soon" light. That light comes on and I know that it's trouble. Now, I can sometimes prevent it from shutting down by reving the engine some. I slip it into neutral and give it some gas. This seems to help prevent it. Sometimes though it just shuts down to quickly for me to catch it and sometimes that doesn't work anyway.

It SEEMS to be associated with the engine getting hotter, on occasion the car overheats (another problem to fix) and when that happens it SEEMS to occur much more frequently.

Good mechanic I know with a lot of experience gets the "feeling" that there is some kind of loose connection.

I am ready for the insane asylum with this thing. It seems that if it was a sensor, the sensor would have completely failed by now, 3 weeks after the problem started. The codes have been read and there is no current code.

Please offer your best guess or theory on this maddening motor vehicle!!!

Thanks!!!

How many miles?
Is the light blinking?
Did you bother to get it scanned for free at any auto parts store? Codes?
I don't like your mechanic friend; Oprah has the feelings, not mechanics. Nothing's getting disconnected.

Clogged cat, bad thermostat

255,000 miles

Service engine soon light comes on periodically, doesn't "blink". It comes on for awhile, which usually means the car will shut down or it stays on a while, minute maybe two, and then just goes off

Been scanned. Shows history of codes; ERG, MAF but no current codes and a shop had it for 3 days and it would not do what it does for me while there and they gave up!

The mechanic I referenced is good. He was just referring to the symptoms as I desricbed them and he said from what he knows and has experienced over the last 45 years doing mechanic work it sounds like it could be a loose/bad connection.

Anyone have any other theories?

weird no codes. hmm clogged fuel filter ? fuel pump perhaps? it needs to be duplicated at a shop pretty much at this point. thats my best guess

Heard that fuel filter clogging is rare but maybe....

Replaced the fuel pump 2 years ago so that should be okay.

Yeah, it is weird alright!
