LIM gasket identifiable?

I've done lots of searching but I can't find anything about if there is a way to check if the infamous LIM gasket is the original poor design or the better redesign. Are there any signs as to which one it is? The car has about 180K on it so I'm guessing that it has been replaced at some point in its history and I'd like to know if it was done with the upgraded part.
 


are they black, or grey?

black with orange is the old design with no metal support, only plastic.

grey with teal has an imbedded metal surround on the ports.
 
just look from the driver side of the engine where the lim meets the head, under the top lip of the valve cover, if you see black gasket between the lim and head its got plastic, if you see silver its been up graded.
 
the new metal gaskets look like this, they are thick.

Look where your top radiator hose meets the engine. That is the thermostat housing. Right below that is where the intake and heads meet. If you see silver, you have metal gaskets, if black they are plastic.

FWIW the plastic gaskets had a few different iterations trying to fix the issues.
 
I think I'm lucky and got the metal ones! sprayed off a little bit of it with engine cleaner and this is what I saw. Looks more silver-ish than the pic shows but definitely not black. Pic is looking at the back right portion of the front valve cover for reference.


So now Im thinking it's those plastic coolant elbows that are leaking down there. But that's a way easier job than the LIM gasket! You can see some of the grime I'm talking about in the picture right at the base of the LIM.
