L36 swap finally..

Finally decided to get the l36 swap and my self ported heads done. I had an entire engine gasket set that I was planning on installing because my engine was a leaking mess... looked beautiful up top, but below the headers was a nasty sight. So I pulled my pan in car and didn't like what I saw... so decided the l67 was coming out and the low miles l36 is going in. Just pulled it and started to tear it down last night. Have to swap the cam and dbl roller over. I'll continue to update it tomorrow as I plan on finishing everything by tomorrow evening. Here's some pics of the work so far. It's a sludgy mess in there! There was quite a bit of metal shavings in there. I don't know where they came from, I've never seen this much junk in any of my 4 3800 cars. I've always changed the oil religiously. But have owned this one the least amount of time and when I pulled the valve covers the first time it looked rough. But has since became much cleaner from oil change to oil change.

This is the third set of heads I've ported, I still have some finish work and polishing to do, but overall I'm pretty happy with how they came out. I have about 10 hours in doing the set. Did all the work with a dremel, drill, and assortment of sanding drums and carbide bits. I didn't hog them out, I did one section at a time from port to port, then moved on to the next section and went port to port to maintain consistency. I used precision measuring tools from harbor freight to make sure port sizes stayed within a few thou of each other.
The last set that I did for my Daytona came out really nice too and worked out really nicely, I did see an increase in power afterwards for sure.

I'm also going to post some pics from when I did the intercooler install and show how I modded my own rails in case anyone wants to try it.

Let me know what you guys think.

Nice! And wait... Are those self moded fuel rails? I'd be curious to see how those work out! I've never though about doing compression fittings like this on fuel rails. Nice work! I know that job sucks. Been there. Should've gone supercharged.

i made my own rail out of a cut up l67 rail, used the same fittings, only i added new tubing and went under the snout and tb so nothing goes over the top. been on for like 2 years now, no leaks.

you need some kitty litter, under the car is trashed lol and nice chunks in the pan, i see why you bailed on that one for sure.

I'm out of floor dry.... I'm about to go grab the litter box out of the house full of turds and throw it down lol

Got quite a bit done for night 1.(last night) Tomorrow morning will swap the parts over to new motor, I have the new motor sprayed down with degreaser gel overnight, the first thing in the morning, it's getting powerwashed, literally every gasket and seal replaced, cam, t chain, arp head studs, primed and painted with hi temp black engine enamel. Then I'll finish porting the heads, do a quick valve job, and back together it goes. I've got a super olllllld school valve spring compressor that makes a quick job of doing the springs. One of those big c clamp deals. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow, it's pretty cool.

Oh and Scotty, if there's anything you could use off of a 01 regal, or 01 century, let me know. They're getting scrapped Monday.

Yeah they are, I too used extra tubing to extend them, and I put the regulator on the back to make it a little cleaner, but wasn't sure about the compression fittings yet and didn't want to run them over the cross over at the rear of the blower, so I am just feeling it out, and will probably go the same route Scotty did when it goes back together, my boss recently bought a huge assortment of compression fittings for the shop and think he might have to donate a few to the cause. Those things get expensive quick at 3-4 bucks a pop. I learned that quick when I made my own new fuel lines for my black 99 coupe a few years ago.
